Can anyone help me understand what this means. I hear many times from my instructor saying.. “unless you lock your knee the pose has not yet started” what does that mean? does it mean one is not getting the benefits of the pose if the knee is not locked for example?

I believe they are trying to say that this is the most important part that you must work on first. It is also one of my least favorite parts of the standard dialog. I can attest that you will get benefits even if you haven’t quite locked the knee yet or in my case touched my forehead to the knee. However, as long as you are trying at whatever 100% is for you at that moment, you will get the benefits. At least that has been my experience and understanding.

One of my instructors once told the advanced class I was in that saying “if the knee isn’t lock the pose hasn’t even begun” is just a Bikram-ism and not the be taken literally. She said that of course you are getting benefits in the posture either way, but Bikram wants people to make sure to lock the knee because if it is bending it can compromise the lower back and potentially cause injury. So, of course you will still get benefits, but locking the knee should be your first step before you move on to the next steps of the posture. Not only will it prevent any injuries, but it builds your quads and leg muscles like nothing else!

My point of contention is that when I started I remember thinking “well if all these poses haven’t even started yet, I must be wasting my time in this impossibly hot room”. Fortunately about the second or third class an instructor clarified that the benefits were still coming as long as you were honestly trying the right way.

I guess I’m fortunate to be going to the studio I do because I’ve never quite heard that statement. I have heard them say that the posture hasn’t started until your standing leg is locked and to focus on that to begin with. They go on to say something like that even if you can’t get your head to your knee but your standing leg is locked you are getting 100% benefit. Personally, I cannot get close to even getting my hands under my lifted foot, but I lock my standing leg, and attempt to begin to bend over making an effort to get my hands under my feet. When I can go regularly, I can see definate progress and that can be encouraging to me.

I agree with a previous poster that if I wasn’t getting any benefit until I could do the posture completely, my 90 minutes would be wasted, well except maybe for savasana!
