I am wondering what hot yoga does for thryoid problems? I started my practice in Ocoboer and have had to reduce my meds twice since then. Thoughts? Anyone else seen an increase in thryoid ftn ater hot yoga?
Well Cate, you must be really pleased!!!
Actually I have been witness to this quite a number of times over the years. So I daresay it’s quite common. It’s wonderful to know your body can function in a more normal way by practicing.
Keep us posted. It’s very inspiring

Gabrielle 🙂i’ve had the same thing!! having to adjust meds
Isn’t that so cool? I was borderline hyperthyroid, but since I’ve started, it’s normalized. (I’ve also lost the migraines, gotten fitter, and was moved to stop eating most meat. Yoga is wonderful…)
I just started hot yoga recently and was wondering about its affect on thyroid. I was doing pretty well (taking it easy, as I’m 54 and not in the best shape) until about 4 days ago when I had a difficult session (probably due to low electrolytes) and since have been feeling tired and “blue”; it feels like low thyroid (I do take a low dose of thyroid meds). I don’t want to lose my enthusiasm for hot yoga, and I’m hoping for some advice about this – could the yoga itself be causing this? Is there anything I should be doing to avoid this? Thanks!
Hi Judith
May I ask you how many classes you have been going to per week and how many weeks?
Remember, this could just be a one-off experience.
Get back to me please!
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂I’ve done about 5 classes over the last 2 weeks – I’m quite a newbie. Thanks
Hi Judith
Everyone has emotional ‘tides’ and these can often be ‘unexplained’. If you try to make it about something (to do with the yoga) you could be sabotaging your own fine efforts.
It is possible too, that you need to give yourself permission to sit out a set or 2 of a pose now and then or even a pose or 2 if you need to. If your fitness level is not where you want it to be yet, then allow yourself to work your way up to that. I know it’s hard when ‘everyone else’ seems to be able to do it, but believe me the extra care you put in now, not only teaches you to be more self aware, it will mean your breakthroughs come faster and with far less struggle!
In a few words: Honor your own path

Gabrielle 🙂Thanks – I will take your advice! I appreciate your prompt replies.
I’ve been taking Cytomel for depression for about 8 months (my THS test has always come back in the normal range, but I have hypothyroid symptoms, a family history and drug-resistant depression, so my psychiatrist gave it a go). I take a high dose of antidepressant, but the depression was not really responding. A few months ago we increased the dose to 75 mcg/day. That really helped. UNTIL I started Bikram yoga.
I’m still very new, I’ve only been practicing for 3 weeks, but have only missed 2 days in the last 2 weeks. Today will be day 10 of my 30 day challenge.
Anyway, I noticed some light insomnia (I can sleep, but I’ve been waking up a few times during the night, and my sleep doesn’t feel as restful) and irritability since I’ve been going to yoga every day – symptoms of hyperthyroid I’d never felt before. I took a thyroid test at the doctor and guess what…all of a sudden my levels are too high and I have to decrease my Cytomel. I’m thrilled!A big part of the reason I started yoga was for the mental health benefits. I take way too much medication and I hope to wean myself off much of it as I go further with yoga. I just didn’t think I’d see results so fast…
yes I too take meds and have to adjust according to my practice:) now my doc makes me get tested every month
