Hi ,
I have been doing Bikram yoga for a month and I practice at home when I can’t go for the class. Recently when I did the awkward pose, I felt tightness in one of my knees and it pained whenever I had to bend my knee for a couple of days. Did anyone have the same problem? What should I do about it?
-Thanks in advance
Namaste,
NehaHi Neha,
Which part of awkward pose do you think bothered your knee? in the first two parts, the alignment is important so that the knees and feet and hips are all in one vertical line. As a general rule, the feet are 6 inches apart, but this may vary depending on your specific body measurements. If you have a mirror when you practice at home, keep an eye on that alignment. Especially when you are deep in this posture, make sure your knees stay in alignment and are not moving inward (or outward in my case!).
In the third part, the knees come together and should stay pressed together throughout the posture. This is to protect the knees.
Are you experiencing pain/discomfort during the posture itself, or just after your practice?

Hi Neha
Kristin is correct: Alignment is important! Well – actually alignment is important in all poses! it can make the difference that makes the difference for you. It’s what all my work is based on 😉
In this pose I would add that you must pay extra attention to your ankles. Often the ankles will fall inward (with the effect of collapsing the foot and affecting the complex physiology and alignment of the knees). So paying attention to the way the feet and ankles are will have a flow on effect for the knees and hips.
Let us know how you go to see if we can help you further
Namaste
