So I’ve been dealing with what my PCP says is hip bursitis for the last several months. This pose (and upward bow, and camel) make the pain change. Instead of a pinching in the groin or side of the hip pain that I have been experiencing, this pose gives me a hot knife cutting pain down the top of my thigh. It burns like my leg has been set on fire! It lasts throughout the pose, and I normally back down from going in deeper or longer because of the fear of hurting myself. (And the pain, ow!!)

Can anyone tell me what this pain is, why it is, and if it is the bursitis or something else?

    Hi Nikki

Is there any pain in Standing Bow?

No pain in any of the standing series. Oh, I’ll rephrase. There is no burning thigh – hot knife down the top of my thigh in the standing series. 😉

Hmm. Do you have very tight quadriceps. If so, I wonder if, in in the poses you mentioned, the quadriceps are pulling tightly over your femoral nerve and causing the pain? Seeing a massage therapist, or someone else who can do an assessment, and then release the quads, or any other muscles around the area, can really help.

Hi Gabrielle, my friend is also having something similar. For months now, her hip has been feeling strained in locust especially when she lifts her left leg up as well as when she lifts both legs up. The sensation then moves more to the top of her thigh into her hip socket.
She also feels it on the side of my hip when she gets up from a seated position.
To me, it sounds a lot like hip bursitis. What do you think? Should she continue what she’s doing?
Thank you very much, would really appreciate your thoughts and advice..

    Hi Eleanor

I would like to know more about the position of the arms and the hands. And in particular, their relationship to the hips. Is there pain on just lying on the arms (in the arms or hips)?

Are your friend’s shoulders on the floor? Or is it just the chest? How close are the fingers together? Is she trying to get the ‘baby fingers touching’? What other details have you? What other poses does she feel it? What does her doctor or physical therapist say? Let’s start there and see where it takes us

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
