Ok, so after my disastrous 2nd class where I could do only about 10% of the poses, I had a chance to reflect on why I couldnt do them. I think one of the reasons I couldnt was because I was concentrating so much on the poses, that I forgot to breath properly and follow through properly to the next position, thus feeling totally out of control with each and every pose. Now, in hindsight, I can only imagine how pitiful I looked to the instructor and the other fellow students as I consistently struggled like a fish out of water trying to get into a standing bow and a camel.
I feel like I should go back to square one and start all over again with the proper techniques of breathing and transitioning. Anyone have any ideas on how to master the concentration of proper breathing and technique. Im almost embarrassed to go back to class?
Hi Sheree
This is what I submitted as your reply, only moments ago. Then I found your new thread. Just keep going here or there (but both won’t be necessary! 😉 )
Advice? OK! Here goes. Go back. But don’t stand right in the back with the newbies. Because most instructors teach to a script that doesn’t handle newbies, standing in the back row means you have to take your cues from people who may very well NOT know what they’re doing.
You should stand in the 2nd row, in between and behind 2 regulars who know what they’re doing. In that position too, you’ll probably have regulars at both sides. Surround yourself with them. You’ll be able to see them from behind and see their reflections too. Teachers actually rely on you looking around (even though a very good class, you should be able to follow the verbal instructions).
You will find the class very satisfying especially when you let go of how well you should be doing. Try to work on great alignment. The script won’t tell you that but you’ll largely have to guess what that means by looking at others and using your intuition. So once again, be surrounded by what you think will be good examples.
Normally the couple of classes AFTER the first one are the hardest because your mind thinks you know what you have to do. It’s impossible to know everything in such a short time! Hey it’s a process
Have a wonderful experience. Come back and let me know how you go
That’s what I wrote. Frankly, you are simply experiencing the difficulties of someone whose expectations are high, was standing in the wrong spot and could have had less than ideal instruction.
When you have better examples I believe things will be easier for you. You are not supposed to struggle. You are currently being overwhelmed by too much ‘stuff’ to do and follow.
Let me know how you go
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂Thanks for the advice Gabrielle. I am definitely going to go back and try again. Like you said, maybe the instruction wasnt ideal! I dont think Im going to stand in the 2nd row though only because I am going to try and use the bar at the back of the room to help me balance some of my poses. My balance is AWFUL!!!
Ive been so wanting to try hot yoga and really want to have a good experience with it as I am sure there are many many benefits to it.
Ill let you know how it goes
Hi Cheermom,
you sound hard on yourself! I’ve been doing this hot yoga now for almost two years, and I still have to work on my breath. And my balance. Even though I thought I was focusing on breath in the beginning, it became apparent to me that I wasn’t.
I know you like the back row, but I have found that if I am a bit closer to the mirror I am less distracted by other things, I breathe a bit better, and I balance a bit better. I’m near sighted so if I’m on the back row I feel like I am WAY far away, making focusing on myself harder in general. Just a thought for you to consider.
Just keep in mind that everyone in that class struggles with things all the time. No need for you to be embarrassed. I hope you stick with it and find your focus.
Namaste!

Hi Cheermom,
I am glad you decided to go back to class–I think many people have similar experiences to yours in their initial classes and even once they are “experts”…there are always things to work on. Your idea to focus on the breathing is spot on. If you haven’t already watched Gabrielle’s video on breathing technique (https://www.hotyogadoctor.com/index.php/site/topics/resources/free-yoga-videos), I highly recommend it–it literally transformed my practice.
Try not to worry about what other people in the class think. I suspect that most people are so focused on their own practice that they don’t even realize what their neighbors are doing!
Thanks for the advice & support everyone. I attended my 3rd class this morning with a new attitude and plan of attack. I decided that I would focus more on my breathing, alignment and the teacher’s moniloque and less on what I thought other people were looking at. As everyone has said in the past, “this is my workout and no one elses”, I went at my own pace. It really helped and i found myself not as winded and was able to hold a couple poses pretty well!! Going back tomorrow for class #4…..
Bunni, I did watch Gabrielle’s video on breathing and yes, it helped a lot….I recommend everyone watch it!! I am definitely more aware of my breathing now and find myself correcting my breathing techniques
