Does anyone else ever get twitchy muscles during or after yoga? It happened after yoga the last 3-4 times I’ve done it and its always the same spot… the most medial muscle in my left hand, under my pinky. It also happens while I’m doing awkward poses and it’s a total distraction for me to watch my pinky flailing wildly in my peripheral vision. It’s been doing it during the pose since the beginning, about 3 months now, but not every time.
I take electrolytes about an hour before class so I can’t imagine that it is a potassium depletion, but it really is driving me a little batty.
Lately, I get twitchiness in muscle in my palm under my thumb. It’s never been enough to bother me, but it is a curious sensation. I’m suspicious that it is due–at least in part–to significant computer usage, but it does act up during and after Bikram.
I think that what you are experiencing is pretty common after all forms of intense exercise. It is called benign fasciculation and really doesn’t have alot to do with electrolyte inadequacies. It has to do with lactic acid buildup, muscle fiber damage and free radical buildup:
