I’m fixed firm alright…I’ve been practing for six months and can only sit up in this pose, with my hips nowhere the floor and my feet not totally flat on the floor. The positive side is that it used to hurt to the point of me wanting to cry every time, and now its just very uncomfortable. Baby steps, I suppose. But is there more I could be doing to try to get my hips to the floor?

I’m sure others will have more insights, but just take it easy. It sounds like you’ve already made progress! That’s a really hard pose for many people, especially if you’ve got some knee stuff going on. You know what they say, “You can mess with the gods, but you can’t mess with your knees.”

    Hi Jessica

Sometimes the problem is that it is so hard to truly surrender to gravity because it hurts – your feet hurt (and perhaps your legs or knees do too) against the hard and unforgiving floor. This causes your muscles to tense up which works against your real intention. If this goes part of the way to describe what it’s like for you then place a folded up mat or soft towel under your legs and feet. The idea is to create enough comfort to give up your body’s defenses. Now if you don’t want to do this in class, then I suggest you do it at home. You can try to do this with a cushion from your lounge chair.

For a while I spent 4 minutes a day in this position at home. It really seemed to accelerate the opening. And opening my knees a bit also helped. The other thing I do, which I now everyone can, is try to ake sure that I’m sitting exactly upright so that gravity is working with me the most possible.

nowadays, in the first set my butt isn’t on the ground but it slowly lowers. Halfway through the second set I feel like the butt is firmly enough on the ground to allow me to go back. Sometimes that is ;-). One day at a time.

thanks for the tips! I’m working on sitting straight up at the moment and relaxing my face, lol :). I will practice the 4 minutes at home because no one uses props in my studio and i feel self-conscious!
