Is there a certain method to cleaning my yoga mat?
I try to rinse it in the shower but I feel like there’s an easier way out there.
Kristin
I keep a spray bottle with part water, part Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap, scrub gently with a washcloth, and let it air dry. I know you can buy mat cleaners, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the extra money. 🙂
I’ve read about people who throw their mat in the washing machine, but I’m not so sure about that. Seems like it would wear the mat out pretty quickly.
Hi, Kristin:
I use a sticky may and a yoga rug on top, and I put both in the washing machine on cold with just a little gentle detergent (the kind for baby clothes). I set it to the “handwash” cycle which has low or intermittent agitation. I do this about once a week.

I through my sticky mat in the pool, flip it over, and through it on a lounge chair to dry. Figure the chlorine will kill whatever nasty germs that linger there.
I’ve been putting mine in the machine every couple of weeks and using the mat spray in between. That has worked very well for me.
Hi everyone :cheese:
Just FYI here is another thread you may want to look at regarding mat cleaning: Cleaning your mat.
In a nutshell, we use several drops each of tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil added to water in a spray bottle. After each class we spray, leave for a few moments, wipe it down. These oils are both natural disinfectants. Then, when we can we lay them out flat outside for several hours and use the power of the sun to clean them as well.

Gabrielle 🙂And I sometimes wash mine in the machine (as per above – be gentle!) as I am a big sweater, then hang it out to dry in the sun or on the line. Repeated washes have lost some color in the mat, but not much wear and tear. I tend to buy a new one every year anyway, somehow it’s nice to have a fresh mat!
I like the idea of throwing it in the pool! I do that with myself after a class sometimes – fabulous feeling! Hadn’t thought about doing it with the mat. (Must admit I DO shower first).
