Gabrielle,
I had an inguinal hernia surgery and an umbilical hernia surgery 3 months ago. They were both due to being pregnant with big babies! My surgeons gave me the ok to do yoga like 4 or 5 weeks post surgery he is very easy going! He used a mesh on the inguinal hernia area but not on the umbilical area.
But I am afraid that he may not know how much stretching most the yoga positions require I do flow yoga with heat. Could you please guide me or advice me whether or not I can do all of the stretches, or will I be putting myself at risk ir developing another hernia?
 Thank youMartine
Hi Martine
It’s not usually the stretches that are going to put you at risk. It’s the effort during moving to and from the floor or in and out of forward bends that I would be most careful with.
As you know your hernia is a break in the muscular ‘corset’ so anything that would potentially cause an extrusion of your ‘innards’ would be the issue. You need to know how to keep your corset strong.
A strengthening of your core muscles is recommended (see my Free Videos Section cos there’s a neat exercise there). Sucking in your tummy helps but is not the only way to improve core strength. Anyway most women have been introduced to Kegel exercises at some stage. There are plenty of yoga poses which will help you, or you could go to a Pilates teacher.
Are you feeling vulnerable at all at your surgery sites (or elsewhere)?

Gabrielle 🙂Hi, this thread is really useful, but my case is really different, I had a open mesh repair on my right side two months back, now I feel quiet ok and no signs of pain, or any complications, but I have started getting a little pain on the other side that is left groin, I think it might be just a start or can be a starting point in hernia formation though I don’t have any bulge or anything but just pain like i had on other side in the beginning.
But this time I really want to take every care I can to avoid hernia on this side, I eat lots of fruits, juices, fresh vegetables, fennel tea etc to avoid constipation and smooth passing of stools, also avoid getting cough and lifting anything heavy.
I want to know what are yogic asanas I can do considering being operated on one side which is now all good and having symptoms on other side.
Thanking you in advance for your valuable sugesstions.
Love Ash
