Like I was saying in another thread, I just recently attended my first Bikram yoga class earlier this week. Now, I knew I was going to sweat, but I really had no idea HOW MUCH I would end up sweating! Even with a sticky mat, my hands and feet still slipped at times, enough to get on my nerves a bit. Do you think using yoga socks and/or gloves would prevent that in the future?
Hi Stickymat
no, probably not! You’ll get used to and it’s possible you’ll sweat less. Do you happen to notice lots of other people with yoga socks or gloves on? I would be interested to know

Gabrielle 🙂Definitely agree they are not necessary. I’ve even had teachers ask people to remove their socks if they wore them inside to class. Can’t say I’ve noticed anyone wearing gloves.
I’m trying to figure out when your hands would slip in a Bikram class? Can you say what pose that is? Also, do you have a towel on top of your mat?

Well, I didn’t pay close attention to the other people in class, with the exception of the people to my immediate left and right, respectively. They weren’t wearing gloves or socks though.I’m trying to figure out when your hands would slip in a Bikram class? Can you say what pose that is? Also, do you have a towel on top of your mat?

No, I haven’t memorized the names of the poses yet. And no, I didn’t have a towel on top of my mat. I kept one off to the side, but I have to admit that I didn’t think to lay it down on top of the mat!
Hi Sharon
It really is useful to stand and lie on a towel. It’s usually what everyone else would be doing. In this case it is good to be a ‘copycat’.
If you want to diagnose which poses your hands slip then zip on over to “yoga poses” (see above in the menu) and you can look at the photographs

Gabrielle 🙂I would guess the instructor would ask you to remove the gloves and socks. To get all of the benefits of your practice, it can only be you and your will to get you through each posture. You’ll have to build the strength to hold on and have a firm base. I’ve practiced in many different Bikram studios and they all have had a slip resistant floor.
