in reply to: weight gain, water retention, bloating… #8928
I don’t weigh myself very often but I did about 2-3 weeks ago and I was the same weight I’ve been all year. It is where I hang out +/- a couple of pounds.
Well lately I’ve been feeling that menstrual bloat -I usually get it for a day or two but this time it has been about a week. My belly just feels huge and distended -I’m always amazed that I can feel like that one day and then ready for the skinny jeans the next. It doesn’t feel like regular “weight-gain” – which I can usually see on my face and in my thighs. And my thighs are leaner and smaller than ever.
So I jumped on the scale this morning and I’ve put on 7lbs!! In like 2 weeks!! Without any major changes to my diet. I don’t eat a great diet because of food anxiety issues but I’ve worked out what works for me and I haven’t changed it much. The changes over the last few weeks:
1) upped my hot yoga to 5x a week -I had done 75 classes at about 3-4 classes a week and then took 3 weeks off due to vacation and illness and when I started back I started back with 5x a week.
2) Cut out my box-a-day wheat thins habit – replaced with pretzels -less of them
3) Started drinking coconut water for electrolytesI’ve been craving salt like crazy -as I do with hot yoga. I’m sweating more than normal it seems in my yoga classes. I can’t do sea salt because I have a shellfish allergy and since sea salt is all the rage they have been harvesting it in a way that gets shellfish in it.
ETA -I know some of it is likely muscle gain -but I’m more concerned about the belly bloat feeling than the details of the number.
in reply to: Did you quit your weights for more yoga? #8435Vancouver Canada’s Costco has 12 big cans of coconut juice for 12 bucks. (There’s really no other juice in it besides the coconut) and it has 640 mgs of potassium. yummy, yummy, yummy.
I drank soo much of Coconut water while I was pregnant (long story -but I needed electrolytes badly) -it can get quite $$$ -I’ll be sure to check costco.in reply to: Anyone fire their alternative care provider? #8421Wonderful for you! I love hearing stories like this. I was thinking I needed to see my chiro last week but a couple classes later it seems less urgent.
in reply to: Did you quit your weights for more yoga? #8419Thanks HankGretchen.
Lots to think about there – I’ve certainly had my issues with joints and tendons. I’ve been doing the body part thinking for 20+ years now since my brother took me to his gym one spring break.I’m still loving the hot yoga -but the mornings I’m supposed to do my 20min. kettleworks workout I dread it. So I don’t think it is the heat as I feel good otherwise. I need to get on some coconut water. I have allergies and have been trying to get my electrolytes with whole foods and not supplements.
in reply to: Triangle Pose #8414Thanks! I’m still mostly seeing folks with both feet on their mat – (or rocks ;LOL). I just wonder if I should be doing it that way until I get stronger. Of course then I’d be the only one in the room turned to the side.
in reply to: Triangle Pose #8412Really? When I googled the pictures I all saw were people with their feet on the mat. It is a bear to do this off the mat IMHO.
in reply to: Shorts that don't show sweat #8410I figure you’re going to sweat through anything you wear so why bother adding layers of underwear? I have a pair of Nike dri-fit capris in navy blue that don’t show sweat much, and some black shorts that aren’t too bad. But at this point I’ve really just given up worrying about it. I bought a pair of tan/sand colored shorts as well and yeah, you can see sweat more, but by halfway through class they are completely wet with sweat anyway.
The way I see it – I’ve never noticed sweat patterns on anyone else’s clothing because I’m focused on myself in class. So I’m just not going to worry about it. Likewise, I’ve also started wearing bra tops despite having a less than perfect midsection. Why? When I can see my abs, it reminds me to keep my core activated. And while I don’t normally subject people to looking at my belly, I figure that they are probably (like me) focused on their own practice and not worried about what I’m wearing. 🙂
Good for you! You make some good points! I am not there yet however -esp as I may stop on the way home for a quick errand -I know I could change/ add a layer -but I wish my pants would just not show that nice sweat and if I’m going to buy a new pair anyway -I would love it if it worked for me this way too. Also, I don’t seem to end up with a uniform sweat (probably because I wear these to one of my cooler classes (90*) because I haven’t yet gotten to where I can wear capris in my hotter class. Currently I wear shorter bike shorts (they are old and not very ‘technical’ and soccer or tennis shorts underneath.
in reply to: New to hot yoga – lots of questions #8407Thanks! I’m sore from both! I’ve been doing my weights long enough that I know what sore from that feels like and I’m assuming all the new sore is from my yoga.
I eat pretty clean – I don’t typically lose weight by diet/food -I’ve tracked for years and no amount of calorie cutting ever gets me to lose. Mostly I lose on activity.
in reply to: Share this mat towel to you guys #8406I really lie my Manduka eQua mat towel – it does wonders for making me feel more secure in triangle pose. I know ideally, I’d be able to hold the pose on ice, but the fear of slipping unexpectedly (particularly with my bad knees) used to prevent me from trying to sink down as far as I could. And that extra sense of security helped me focus on the pose instead of contemplating what would happen if my foot slid out…
And I guess they make a hot yoga specific version of this towel if you need to absorb more sweat, but I haven’t tried it yet.
Interesting – we do triangle across our mats so our feet are never on the mat during trianle -just the carpet -which can be quite slippery IMHO.in reply to: Share this mat towel to you guys #8403My gripe with Yogitoes is that it can’t handle the amount of sweat that I sweat out in a Bikram class. However, I do find it useful to take when I travel. I use a Yogitoes towel along with Gabrielle’s dialog mp3.
I personally love the Breathe mat. I now own three of them.
What makes the breath mat better than the yogiotes? I was looking into a towel and had it narrowed to the yogitoes or the Yogiearth. Is the Breath easily washable? -
