in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #5902
my instructor recently told us that in time the toxins will leave your body and the sweat will sting less if at all…. and we’ll be less slimy. i’m looking forward to that day!
in reply to: Hair Damage #5898its fairly wavy, but its very very thin so i cant go more than a day or so without washing, unfortunately.
in reply to: Hair Damage #5883na, too short already… but sometimes i wear a bandana or a cotton headband
in reply to: Hair Damage #5880we are rationing water at home right now (live rurally) so i wash my hair only when i go to yoga (M-W-T-F). hmmmm. it must be the stove then. gonna have to figure out how to rectify that situation.
i thought about the humidity of the room, too… but i do sweat a LOT. who knows. can you recommend a good conditioner? lol
in reply to: first time…really hot… #5876It took me almost 3 months to truly acclimate. Now I actually feel cool in the room by the time I’m on the floor, which still amazes me. It’s not like that every day, but I’d say at least 80-90% of the time. The days I feel hot I drank less water or forgot to supplement my electrolytes.
in reply to: tight shoulders and neck! #5868Why do you suppose it is that if I keep my arms down at my sides in a natural position I can do a standing back bend and fall way back into it, especially if I push my hips forward while contracting my hamstrings and glutes, but if I put my arms up over my head, as in this pose, I can’t even do 50% of that bend. I try relaxing my front side and shoulders, but it doesn’t seem to help much and the most frustrating part is that I feel like I’m crushing my lumbar spine even though I am stretching up before I drop in. Is this just a mental block out of some sort of fear? I find it very strange.
in reply to: Ravenous for sugar post bikram #5796These aren’t very good for you to say the least, but sometimes I like to have an otter pop after class %-P
Almost forgot… the Ultima Replenish that Gabrielle recommended is really great. When I take it before class I power through it and don’t feel wiped out afterward. I’m one those people that can get all red-faced and dizzy and I don’t have that problem when I drink this stuff first. I haven’t tried it before and after yet, but I’m sure it would kill that sugar craving pronto.
in reply to: Pelvic Tilt made ALL the difference! #5795I have a really, really hard time keeping my belly tight, hips tucked. Maybe it’s still cause I’m so new at it and I find myself distracted by trying to remember to breathe right and not keep my ‘armor’ up…. I have a real problem with holding tension in my upper traps all the time… but I have noticed that I’m getting better at it during pranayama at least! I can finally see my ribcage on the inhale :cheese:
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #5783Just an FYI about those yoga toe socks and some of you may already know this but they don’t help you stay put AT ALL. In fact they made it worse and I had to take them off.
in reply to: my studio is SMELLY! #5741complementary towels!! omg. where’s your studio? maybe i’ll move there!! :wow:
in reply to: my studio is SMELLY! #5730“Inner Fire Yoga and Wellness Center, Madison,”
Sounds wonderful, Dar!!
PS…. Gabrielle, thank you for the breathing video!! I think it will help me a lot.
in reply to: my studio is SMELLY! #5729I’m glad for this thread for two reasons. The first day I went, if I hadn’t already paid, I may have turned around and walked out. First from the blast furnace heat (somehow I didn’t really think it would be that hot, funny!) and from the lovely nutty, hot brine smell, as I’ve come to call it. It really is pretty gross and if I think about it too much I’ll get creeped out by it. So, I guess the brine smell is normal then. I can’t say that I notice ‘unhealthy’ odors, but there is carpet in there and no one turns their towels or their mats and from what I’ve seen, the room is not aired out between classes so I just don’t know how safe it really is. I do know that people walk around and shower barefooted there and to me that’s not hygenic, but they wont let us wear shoes of any kind beyond the foyer. I wonder if all studio’s are like that.
Second…. slipping! I sweat a lot and am ALWAYS sliding out of position and one day it caused me to get stuck with my forehead on the floor in the spread leg position, not ready for it yet either mind you, and I pulled a hamstring. It also happens in warrior/triangle. If I am sweating particularly heavily, I slide out and have to constantly re-scoot back into place which interferes with my concentration and effectiveness, and sometimes I have to put my hands on the floor to get out of the position because I’ve slid so far out. It always makes me nervous about injuring myself. I’ve heard about these yoga socks that are supposed to be non-slip, but if you’re sweating, they are just going to slide around on your feet, too I’m guessing. Has anyone tried those and if so, did they help?
in reply to: Bikram for weight loss – any stories for me?! #5685Hi! I’m new, too… in the middle of my 4th week, going 4 times a week – Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri. I started at about 145lbs… not sure what that translates to in kilos. About a week ago I was weighed for the doc and I was 143 which doesn’t mean squat. But…. I have lost about 2 inches in the way my clothing fits and I look much better naked and feel amazing. Which is what counts! Muscle weighs a more than fat so you may not change much on the scale… at least in the beginning.
ps… I love that it’s so addictive. I have never craved any kind of exercise before. I am thankful for Bikram!
in reply to: Emotional and physical issues arising after yoga?? #5666Hi Gabrielle!
Thanks for the welcome and kind thoughts. I did think of that and it makes total sense, but I do have some ‘mother’ issues to work out and I think the stress of that being in the now is also having an effect. I’m sure a lot of it is in the past… but, we’ll see! I’m just glad to have my desert space in that room. It’s worth every penny!
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #5664I sweat a lot too and was concerned about electrolytes… but I don’t like the idea of drinking Gatorade several times a week. I am also concerned about all that water flushing out all the good stuff in my body. I drink anywhere from 2 litres to a gallon a day on days that I go to class and 1-2 litres on days I don’t go. It is my one and only fear about hot yoga. If I drink less, I have a tendency to get dizzy in class. Can anyone recommend a better, healthier method of replacing electrolytes and other nutrients?
in reply to: Emotional and physical issues arising after yoga?? #5663I am happy for this topic. I am probably on my 10th class and am new to yoga all together. During my first class, I got to Camel pose and lost it. As I leaned into my back bend I literally felt as though something was ripped from me through my chest and shoulders and I just wanted to curl up in a ball and sob. It totally came out of left field. I just sat there struggled to breathe and felt as though I would hyperventilate. The amazing thing was, that when I woke up the next morning, I woke up lighter and happier than I had ever been in my life. I am TOTALLY convinced that something did leave me that day. Since then, in my whole ten days of yoga so far, I’ve had two other emotional outbreaks that have interrupted my practice, caused dizziness and shortness of breath because I was on the verge of tears. I know that eventually, all of this will work itself out… that and I’ve signed myself up for therapy because clearly, something is there that needs work outside of yoga.
in reply to: fever sores #5662Cold sores and fever blisters are an outbreak of the herpes simplex virus and can be caused by many things, including excessive heat. If that is what you have, then you should know that outbreaks are predominantly caused by stress, menstruation, excessive sunlight, and a weakened immune system from colds, flu, or other illness. To help with outbreaks, you can introduce more natural Lysine to your diet and/or get a prescription of Zovirax (Acyclovir) or Valtrex (Valcylovir) from your doctor. Zovirax is better for treatment of outbreaks, Valtrex is better for prevention of outbreaks. Abreva is a good otc topical. The important point to bring up is that it’s important to not touch the sore, then touch your eyes. That’s hard to do when you’re sweating profusely.
