I do a a “pick-me-up Bikram Yoga” and sun salutation before my skateboarding, and in the the spring and autumn it can be very cold outdoors, but it still works and feels good.

    It also might be Spondylitis.

So difficult when names differ from swedish and english.

Spondartros is what the doctor said it is called in Swedish.

I asked an indian ayurvedic doctor (vaidya) that visits Sweden now and then, and he thinks it is Spondylitis. But I don’t think so..

    Confusing…

so, i guess bikram yoga and ayurveda can help me, and the most famous hot yoga doctor… gabriell scanlon!

in this article Osteoarthritis is not just because one is considered old… ( i do insist i am ageless…;-) but it is a process of years of wear and tear.

I was at the doctor today. He told me I most likely suffer from a mild Spondylartros (don’t now the english word).

He put me on some anti-inflammatory drugs.

If you know what Spondylartros is, maybe there are things in Bikram Yoga to put extra attention on.

Except this problem my body is in better shape than ever and I skate better and more smooth than when I was 25, and thanks a lot to Bikram Yoga.

I have no other plan than to skate at a high level forever… I do have a fighting spirit and now I will cure and stop this Spondylartros, and need some tips and advices.

I’My husband is in the gym 5 times a week and our washing machine is going every single night. Well worth it tho! We manage to avoid the dryer when ever possible.

The washing machine going every night? If I did that my electricity bill would be very high… 2-4 times a week is more normal here. And I try to make it full to save on energy.

I don’t use the tumble dryer, but do have a problem to dry the clothing.

I travel a lot and I have to say that Thailand in november was a great climate for me. Warm and humid, my skin got so much improved.

Brazil was a bit like that as well, but in Sao Paulo I got outbreaks of acne in my face, most probably due to the pollution. In Rio the acne disappeared…

And skateboarding, getting sweaty without freezing… I was actually amazed about being sweaty and not freezing in Thailand. And I did BIkram Yoga on a balcony and it felt like being in a studio. At a restaurant I had to ask to eat outdoors instead, as the airconditioning was way too cold for me… yes, some Swedes can not take cold very good as due to the extreme cold here, we always make sure to heat our homes and wear warm clothing.

California is not as humid as Thailand, but I always get frustrated how long it takes to dry t-shirts when I stay close to the beach.

I understand what you mean with washing the yoga shorts by hand. It’s like what I do with my surftrunks after being at the beach or in a pool, I rinse them off.

But right the beach and summer feels far away… This is how it sometimes looks like in winter where I live:

You use a washing machine everyday? Lots of people here only have access to that once a week when you live in an apartment. Myself, I have one in my apartment but using it everyday would ruin me… the electricity cost would be so high. And, we are told to always fill it up. Twice a week using the washing machine is normal here I think. But when you have small kids it can be more.

And yes, it is dry here. When you do outdoors sports lke skateboarding in the autumn and spring you may have:

    – underwear
    – “long jones” functional
    – long sleeve functional
    – long sleeve t-shirt
    – t-shirt
    – long pants
    – wind jacket
    – beanie

Can you imagine washing that everyday? Or have 7 sets of each…?

With hot yoga, well, speedos/bike shorts and mab a tanktp is not much too wash. And havig 2 sets is very little anf affordable

When I do my Bikram Yoga at home I sometimes hardly sweat, my clothing do not get wet.

At least here in Sweden dermatologists suggest no more than 3-4 showers a week. They say that exzema and other skin conditions is a side effect of showering too often. I have exzema myself and do see that too much showering too often and baths do make make the exzema worse.

Most backbends seem to have goo effects on my back, BUT, the bow on the floor is terrible. I don’t know why, but bending backwards and lefting both legs hurts. Standing Bow feels good. Strange.

I found a post where you, Gabrielle, wrie about focusing on backbends.

This article also talks about that:
    http://www.bikramyoga.com/testimonials/HerniatedDiscs.htm

Thete is says that the first part of the Camel can be done several times during the day. I tried that yesterday and it feels OK.

Maybe I have been wrong in focusing more on the forwards bends, and should not work hard in them.

Bikram dialog from iTunes is really good. Now I understand what he means with push, push, push, kill yourself etc. That IS how it feels when you do yoga with a backproblem. But of course, it is about a stretch pain, not an injury pain. And the push, push, push, kill yourself, work hard etc do not really apply when you already are healed, flexible and strong I guess. I can feel that in some poses.

Gabrielle, you should als o have a dialogue for download. So we the “homeyogis” can have different teachers. Now, when no dialogue it takes like 30 min faster, 60 min instead of 90, but when one really want to be like in a studio it is great with the dialogue and a great way to be remined about the details, yet important, one do forget.

The chiropractor wants to see if the cause right now is the inflammation before x-rays, as he beleives it is an inflammatory issue now.

Maybe I should try to do all but the backbending poses.

An ayurvedic doctor I visit recommended an ayurvedic herbal preparation for inflammation I have not tried before.

Thanks for all suggestions and support.

Thank you very much for your support and willingness to help.

I have an appointment with a doctor december 9. He will most likley prescribe stonger anti-inflammatory than what I have tried. And maybe x-ray my back. My chiropractor says first try stronger anti-inflammatory and if that not helps, x-ray the back.

I can’t figure out if it is bone or muscular problem.

BUT now, when I have been sitting down for a few hours and stand up, it feels the pain have moved from left side to the right side a bit.

Today my back is worse than ever. All backbends in the series seem to aggravate the stiffness and pain and also the balancing stick. Fixed firm not too bad however.

I have tried to rest 1 week, but that did not help.

Should do all poses BUT the backbends for some time?

in reply to: Proper situp form #3732

In Bikrams new book the sit-up is taught differently.

Inhale and then do sit up, first exhale going down and then another exhale. Forehead to the knees.

Also, when looking at old pictures of Bikram, one can see many differences in poses than it is taught today.

So, it seems to be a lot of inconsistencies. Which makes things confusing, as Bikram says it is very important to try the right way.

Personally I follow Gabrielles recommendations, as it feels better and makes more sense. Maybe Bikram himself is not the best expert when it comes to anatomy and how to do poses safely. Or he learned his stuff before science discovered more about human anatomy? He is not aware of the Ayurvedic approach to exercice and beleive all sports are bad, just because he himself used convential training methods (which is bad for the body) and got hurt.

I recommend him and everyone else to read John Douillards book “Body, Mind and Sports”. It fits perfectly with Gabrielles approach to yoga.

BTW, why is this site not called Bikram Yoga Doctor?

Maybe some of these yogis “cheat”? I did see some dumbells in the dressing room at the Bikram headquarters…

For some actors, needing quickly look more muscular for a specific role, maybe going to the gym or do situps and stuff is faster and more effective than the Bikram Yoga? (Most likely not very good for the body to change it so drastically some charactar actors do).

I do the modified childs pose, but it has not much effect. What works the most is to sit in a chair or a sofa… my chiropractor is amazed, he has never seen that before.

I avoided the sit-ups for months, but now try to do them and it feels good.

I can do the the toe stand a little bit. It is very, very good for skateboarding.

Hands to feet and standing intense stretching feels good, no problem with the back when doing them. Actually, when I stand up, like waiting for my run at a contest or demo, it feels good to bend forward… the opposite for most people with lower back problems.

Hand to feet and sitting on a chair is the most relaxing for my back, espeially If I dn’t sit too straight.

Looking at videos on You tube, i see all these Bikram Yogis with six packs. Like this Garcia. Did they got those abs from Bikram Yoga itself?

For me, doing each pose ones takes 30 minutes. And that is what Bikram writes in his book.

The chiropractor has now workd on my lower back, but problem is still here. He had to manipulate some and it is beter, but still stiff in the morning, and when I stand up, but good when I sit or when I skate. Strange.

I am eating some boswellia and some western medicine to get rid of the inflammation. It is a bit better, but still stiffness and pain.

Bikram Yoga no problem except the Dhanurasana (Floor Bow). It makes the pain and stiffnes worse. How can that be? And what to do?

Pain and stiffness also when laying on back, but releif laying on the side.

    Any ideas?

Hi again, in real time.. msut be early morning where you are.

Well, about my cardio, I am almost dead after a 2 minute freestyle skateboarding routine… actully, after 1 min i strat to get tired, difficultu breathing through my nose, and sometimes miss a trick due to tiredness. And thus is thinking of ways how to improve, without turning to other kinds of exersice, but let Bikram be the thing.

However, I do some push ups and situps almost every day, according to John Douillards principles.

But why do I get a bit of a belly when sitting down… I can see how I have a bit more fat, even though muscles under. My diet is kind of good, vegetarian, but I have asweet tooth and a few times a week eat icecream and some chocolat. But only icecream in summer.

Some say men do get a belly when they get older, but I don’t want to…

    Danielle,

I usually count my breathing. Counting seconds makes my brain go crazy…

An inhale and exhale is about 10-15 seconds for me.

So when it says 10 sec, it is one complete breath for me (inahle exhale), 20 sec is 2 complete breaths. I do Ujjayi on exhale as taught by John Douillard (author of Body, Mind and Sports), and I also use that breathing technique when skateboarding.

Maybe if one holds too long, the cardio work gets less? Remember I do my yoga at home, and can’t heat up my place, too complicated. I have 22-27 celcius, depending on winter or hot summer. I wish to get a lot of cardio benefit for my skateboarding, but also be more flexible and strong.

And generally you start timing when you are in the pose.

Do you mean when I have reached the farthest I can get, I start to time? Sometimes it takes like 4 breaths to reach the farthes I can go.

I also meditate twice a day, it adds up to 1-2 hours a day. I do the TM-Sidhis which I have found and is really good.

I do 15-20 min Bikram “pick-me-up set” before and after my skateboarding sessions (pro skateboarder).

Meditate and do Yoga I have found I can cut down on the hours skateboarding and still do good, actually do better, at least after 30 years on a skateboard. It is so muchmentally in this sport, and also a body in shape helps.

Sometimes I do a half class after my skateboarding. 1-2 times a week I do a full class.

I always do Bikram Yoga at home, no studio close. Will I get the same cardio benefit?

To sum it up: 3 half class Bikram Yoga a week at home. 1-2 full class Bikram a week at home.

Will Bikram at home, my schedule, keep my belly flat? I am now 44 (feel ageless) and at least when I sit down It seems my belly is getting bigger… but not when I stand up. But sitting… PANIIIIIC!!!

Gabrielle, your sequense of the “Pick-me-up” is great! Feel better for me than the sequence in Bikrams book. It feels better doing satnding postures first and then all floor, and especially for me the childs pose before the final twist.

Thanks for the tip about modified childs pose!

The pain started after a nights sleep.

I get worse the day after skateboarding practice.

My good chiropractor is on vacation… I had problems for 20 years, but in early 2000 I started with Bikram Yoga (home practice) and my chirorpractor saw differences in my body and then I didn´t need to visit him again. I have had some problems after that, but usually they disappeared after 3 days of full series (home practice). But not this time 🙁 And it is wonderful skateboarding weather here in Sweden right now!

What about doing the pick-me-up set. layed out in Bikram’s book?

I do that (pick-me-up poses once) before and after my skateboarding sessions + 6 sun salutations (that I do after the standing forward bend).

if too tired after the skating, I skip the sun salutations.

Sometimes I do a half class (all postures once) after my skateboarding.
