in reply to: What are the benefits of a 30-day challenge #5722
Please make that antimicrobial flooring. 🙂
in reply to: What are the benefits of a 30-day challenge #5721Yes, it closed a year ago this week, October 30th! They have two others studios, one in Kits and one in the West End, and I have no idea when or if they will re-open a third.
I have switched to the Richmond studio and love it (different owners than Cambie) – for many reasons – consistent heat, high ceilings, microbiotic flooring, 30-day challenges, pot-luck get-togethers, supplyin of towels and mats, etc.
in reply to: Injuries & Older/Less Athletic Students #5578And for the record, if and when I run any kind of educational events, yoga retreats, or trainings it would be more likely to be in the US or thereabouts. So thank you very much for the lovely feedback about my manual. I appreciate it.
Namaste
GabrielleNoooooooo, Gab!!! Not the U.S.!!! Ever since your questionnaire I’ve had this happy thought in the back of my mind that someday, maybe a year or two from now, after I’d saved up enough money, I’d come to your training in Australia, bring my husband, who’d golf every day, and we’d have a LOVELY time. Now you’ve spoiled my dream. 🙁
in reply to: alignment concerns #5506You know what, I’ve been doing Bikram yoga for eight years and every class I struggle with Half Moon pose. I’m always a little bit twisted, try as I might, to stay aligned. If I’m not twisted, I’m leaning back too far. It’s always something.
I think it’s because it’s in the beginning of the series and my back is not loosened up yet. I have tried it after class is over and have notice how much easier it is to do – but that still doesn’t help me at the beginning of each class!
Love this pose.
You could try YogaBody pills, I find they help.
in reply to: Hatha and HY? #5439Oh, you are extremely lucky to have a Bikram studio so close! Get thee over there!
Initial advice? Drink lots of water before (and after) your hot yoga class, don’t wipe the sweat and breathe only through your nose after the initial warm-up breathing. Remain calm at all times. Enjoy your class and report back!
Wow, Torqued, that’s very impressive! I too notice how much the yoga keeps the arthritis at bay. I think for me, having arthritis, the yoga is not optional, it is a necessity!
When I get lazy, I get sore! Thanks for the inspiration!
in reply to: Hot Yoga v Bikram Yoga #5297I see some interesting stuff in the works with Bikram asking all Bikram studios to become franchises and pay him a small percentage of profits, which monies I am told will go towards funding a task force bringing lawsuits against studios using his methods in a way not approved by Bikram.
In a global world it seems a bit like the Pope trying to enforce strict rules on all the Catholic churches around the world, what they say, how they think.
Wow, Robert, your hard work is VERY impressive!
I finished up my 100-day challenge in June and I remember how fabulous I felt. I have arthritis in various places and did not feel any pains anywhere, everything was loose and wonderful. Since going to an every-other-day practice, I was just thinking today that I feel niggles in various places from various activities and I’m thinking I need to get back to my daily practice. So, August 1, I’ll be back at it, daily, except for a few days holidays here and there that are already planned.
I wish my husband’s doctor would “yell” at him and get him going! Western doctors seem always too happy just to hand out pills and send people on their way. Have you got your significant other interested in the yoga yet?
in reply to: YogaBody supplement really works #5257Gabrielle: I too have started using Lucas’ YogaBody Naturals and felt a difference straight away. I have only taken them for 3 days. I noticed that in my stretches that I effortlessly was able to surrender just that little bit more. It felt great. No pain, just lengthening, stretching bliss.
I finally decided to give the Yogabody pills a try. They arrived on Monday and I started taking them right away. Last night at yoga, Tuesday night, I noticed a difference, I was more relaxed, more peaceful – which is saying quite a bit, I’m already really peaceful and meditative at yoga. After the initial breathing, the first backbend felt WONDERFUL, it seemed like I just went and went and went, and then in the first forward bend – boom – suddenly my cheeks were reporting that my legs needed shaving – ha!
And that’s how the class went from there on. Each posture was just a tiny bit easier. It seemed like I could feel the ends of my muscles, maybe the tendons, right to the core. In my lower back it felt like I could feel tiny muscles along my lower spine, that’s where my mind went, to a place I’ve never been. I’ve never felt those muscles before. Usually I can feel my “lower back”, maybe my butt muscles, but never before gotten past those large muscles to feel inside them – if that makes any sense at all.
Anyway, the point being the Yogabody did make a difference and it’s quite exciting.
in reply to: Crampy Rabbit! #5230I still can’t do Rabbit properly – but, Finalspinal – I think my calf cramps in this pose are due to lack of hydration or my electrolyte balance being off. But, strangely, it’s the only pose I have EVER gotten a cramp in and, man, does it hurt! I know what you mean by “spazzing out of the pose,” i.e., rolling over and grabbing at the painful area. It’s sometimes hard not to reflexively scream out loud! Wouldn’t that be an embarrassing thing to do in class…
in reply to: Bikram for weight loss – any stories for me?! #5217Robert, pray tell, what is an NLP trainer?
Holy catfish! Good for you to take on a 60-day challenge after only just starting this yoga practice! But how wise of you!
Some people do this yoga two or three times a week for years and never make too much headway, as it isn’t often enough for their body to see great change.
I just finished a 100-day challenge and the subtle changes in my body were amazing. I agree, it is difficult to get there every day and a lot of your life has to be sacrificed, but it sure is worth it!
Then to go back to a regular, every-other-practice, I have kept the benefits from the 100 days! I forget what Bikram calls that in his first book – cumulative or something. When you have significant gains, even when you cut back on the times per week you go, you don’t lose all the ground you’ve gained.
Anyway, congrats again on your achievement!
Oh, I like that chamber pot idea! We’ll just keep it in the corner…
Ilyzium, I’ve NEVER had a teacher say anything negative to me when I’ve snuck out to the loo. I too had the habit of going after the standing series, whilst everyone was in savasana, because the minute I would flip over onto my back I could feel my bladder talking to me. The teachers would just wink or wave or whatever and that’s the extent of it.
I would not put up with what you have, it’s ridiculous. I would loudly complain to the studio and if nothing was done, I’d “use my feet,” as Gab said.
But in reading Gab’s post, there’s a lesson to be learned by me in there too. Some days I totally zone out and everyone/everything in the room fades away by Standing Head to Knee. Other days I’m bothered by people wiping, drinking, fidgeting, as if it’s somehow connected to me. “As your yoga goes, so goes your life.”
Sorry, I got a little sidetracked from the topic.
Hi, Ilyzium:
I too was having this needing-to-go-in-the-middle-of-class problem. It was becoming a very bad habit for me.
I think I have now conquered it by stopping all liquids two hours before a class, and making sure my bladder is emptied one minute before class starts.
I have also diligently been working on building my pelvic floor and core muscles for the past six months and, boy, has that ever helped!
Just thought I’d throw that thought in here.
in reply to: Hot Yoga v Bikram Yoga #5121Thanks you very much for educating me on the differences!
I guess it’s pointless for me to keep requesting, then, a silent class at my Bikram studio!
Interesting stuff. Where is your studio located?
in reply to: Bikram for weight loss – any stories for me?! #5115How did I drop 10 pounds in a little over 3 months?
I had some protein at lunch, had a teeny-weeny dinner at 5/5:30, then went to 8 pm yoga for 100 DAYS!!
The pounds just dropped off. I finally had to stop or I would have gotten too skinny!
Now, it’s not a long-term solution, obviously, but it sure did work for me!
in reply to: Sodium & Potassium #5020Yes, coconut water is new in our Vancouver studios this year. It is lovely stuff. It costs a lot, though, $2.50 at one studio, $3.00 at another. I looked into getting it at Costco or Save-On, haven’t had any luck yet.
So it’s a once-a-month treat for me. 🙂
I don’t get bruises so much as rough skin in that area, and under my chin. I think of it as my “yoga goatee.” We were discussing this on the forum a while ago and many others have or have had the same thing. I’ve had my “rough spots” for years. I figure when I’m finally flexible enough that things aren’t pushing too hard in those exact spots, they will disappear.
I always go in the front row at yoga. (I can’t tolerate it when other people go in the front and then they flap around, falling out of postures, drinking water in the middle of postures, stand there wiping themselves down like they’ve just come out of the shower, etc, arggggg) So, anyway, after we had been discussing this on the forum, I looked down the line beside me in the front row and I saw the rough spots on the tops of almost everyone’s feet. Ha! I would say it’s quite common.
in reply to: New since last view… #5013Thanks, Robert, for reminding me of the “View New Posts.” I like that a lot. Now I don’t have to look through and guess which ones I might want to read. Love it. 🙂
in reply to: New since last view… #4999Well, heck, Robert DID ask for feedback! Thanks for all you do, Robert. And I don’t usually access the site through emails, I click on the cute little icon on my desktop.
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4998Well, today I finished Day 100. I am MAKING myself stop tomorrow. I WILL NOT GO TO YOGA TOMORROW, I WILL NOT GO TO YOGA TOMORROW, I WILL NOT GO TO YOGA TOMORROW…..
I had a fabulous class today, felt fit and VERY strong. All that ab work is making the yoga much easier. And, lo and behold, it’s even made my nemesis, Rabbit, easier. Instead of rolling forward like a wheel, I’m sucking in lower and upper and sending my butt to the ceiling. I can ALMOST feel what it should be like. Funny. After all this time.
Yesterday I was lamenting that I’ll never have the yoga perfect, be able to stretch this part, suck this in, hold tight here, let loose there, achhhh, I’m still struggling. Then, after class, a lady commented on how flexible I am and that I must surely have been doing this yoga a long time. I almost looked over my shoulder to see who she was talking to. Didn’t think it could be me. Ha! It’s certainly all relative, isn’t it?
I have a big golf match tomorrow, perhaps that will occupy my mind long enough for the day to pass.
in reply to: BUDDY SYSTEM #4985Robert, I’m in! Can you please add me to this live chat section?
