in reply to: Balance? Tips for getting up and staying up? #4616
I used to have really tight ankles, but Fixed Firm has loosened them a lot. I too have high arches. I find by pointing my toes when sitting in Fixed Firm it helps flatten out my feet somehow. I also do this now in Rabbit – point my toes, I mean. It helps to keep my feet on the floor. I’m not sure if that makes any sense to you…
in reply to: Balance? Tips for getting up and staying up? #4609I stretch my whole body up, tighten my abs, tuck my butt under, tighten my quads and lock my knees, just before going downwards, and even going downwards I keep my torso up as high as I can and abs tight the whole time.
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4600Today will be Day 36 and all is going fabulously. Today was also my first golf day of the year – woohoo!! We had lovely warm weather and it was nice to be back out with all my golfing friends.
Quite a few of them were complaining of stiffness and needing to get massages, getting old, and one of them actually came in limping.
They all know I do this yoga and I’ve invited many of them to accompany me – all have turned me down vigorously. Well, most of them have been playing all winter, my first day out I had a full golf swing, strong core and no aches and/or pains, so I know that will speak for itself.
Although they say that I’m “athletic” that’s why I can do this yoga. I’ve assured them that isn’t so, but you know how people are, there’s no talking them into it.
So I’ll just enjoy my yoga, enjoy my full golf swing, with no sore back at the end of 18 holes, and leave it be. 🙂
in reply to: dehydration… #4596No need to chant, stand quietly and face yourself in the mirror. What the teachers say about no extraneous movement is really true, the less movement, the more focus you can have. Concentrate on breathing slowly and peacefully, even when you’re trying really hard. I haven’t found that lengthening and opening comes with straining and pulling so much, for me it comes with breathing deeply and letting the strain fade away. For instance, Standing Head to Knee, the quad on the standing leg is working really hard, then the quad on the top leg too is working really hard, but it allows a release in the hamstring and lower back.
And then, of course, between each posture there’s time for quiet breathing and stillness.
Ahhhhh, I will enjoy class today. Have a great day!
For the first time in six months, it’s warm and sunny here today. I think maybe winter is really over!!! 🙂
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4594Today I completed Day 34. All is going very well. I am still dissatisfied, though, with how I do Triangle, as my bent knee still wants to turn inward a little bit, so I know my hips aren’t opening.
I spent an hour on this forum yesterday reading about tight hips and took Gab’s advise and jotted down the names of the poses she said were good for hip opening and then went to yinyoga.com and downloaded the poses for the hips. I did them last night and again today before going to yoga. I think they may have helped a tiny, tiny bit. Obviously I’ll need to keep at it for quite a while to get my hips to loosen up.
I won’t be satisfied until I can perform every posture as perfectly as they look in Gabrielle’s book! I see no reason that I shouldn’t be able to. We all have things to overcome to get to where we want to be. 🙂
in reply to: dehydration… #4593Well, teacher training comes along every year.
in reply to: dehydration… #4590There’s something wrong with this whole picture you’re presenting here, 26, to me. Yoga is supposed to be relaxing, quiet meditation, something that’s always there for us, a peaceful, stretching, strength-building place to go to get away from the stresses of life – 90 minutes for you and your body!
It’s not supposed to be pushing and doing doubles to “keep up” and stressing yourself to be on some imagined schedule.
Chill out, step back, regroup, take care of yourself. I don’t want to sound like I’m lecturing, but you’re worrying me.
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4578Yeah, I kind of do stuff with my feet too, not moving them around, but I seem to lift my toes up a lot, especially the left, but only on the initial breathing and Half Moon. I think it’s because I’m tight just then and maybe it’s a tiny bit of relief from that. It’s also because I’m trying to keep my weight back on my heels.
Aren’t we funny!
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4572So here it is, just a couple of weeks after stopping my own use of a tiny facecloth to ONLY wipe my hands before Standing Bow, and I’m finding myself becoming a towel/wiping Nazi!
I think it’s a contagious habit at my new studio. Half the people seem to do it. There’s one particular guy, I call him “the wiper,” as in, “Oh, no, the wiper is setting up right behind me again!”
He misses half the postures, sitting them out, breathing through his mouth, drinking and wiping. He wipes down his entire body almost every other posture.
Okay, I already know the answer – mind my own business and FOCUS!
I could go on the other side of the room, but the other side is hotter.I also know we’re not supposed to always stay in the same spot, but there you go.
Ah, the challenges we face!!
in reply to: Juice Fast #4571I recently did an Isogenix 10-day cleanse, I found that the shake days-plus lunch were fine at yoga, but the just-juice days were really tough.
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4554Day 30 was completed last night and it was marvelous. I was planning on doing a double on Sunday, but I sabbotaged that on Saturday night by have a veggie burger (no bun) but then I had a glass of wine and yam fries! Eeks. Maybe that’s an excuse, but I only did a single. 🙁
Now I’m looking straight ahead to my 60th day, although I have an out-of-town friend coming for a weekend mid-April, so I’ll have to sneak out to an early morning class to keep it going. Luckily the earliest one they have on the weekend at my new studio is 8 a.m., so it’s not too onerous. 🙂
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4521Today is March 28th, so I’ve just finished Day 28. I think I’m going to go for 60 days, maybe 90! I am doing so well I can’t wait to see what I’d feel like after 60 days! I feel so strong, amazingly so at the end of each class, I always think I might go back in and do a double. I actually think I might do a double tomorrow. 🙂
in reply to: Yoga for kids #4520I do recall Gab sent an email about yoga for kids, emphasizing the animal names of each pose. That’s all I remember about it, though. Hopefully she can send it on when she gets back.
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4507Yeah, you’re right, Gab, I didn’t need it and I don’t even miss it one bit. One less distraction in my meditative state.
in reply to: Yoga for kids #4497Oh, what a fabulous idea!
in reply to: Pelvic Tilt made ALL the difference! #4496Stefan:
Yes, Stefan, I always lay now in savasana with my pelvis tilted skyward and have no more back pain. It’s lovely. 90 percent of the postures require my pelvis to be tilted forward. I still have a lot of trouble doing Rabbit because of that, but it’s getting easier.
The only one I can’t do it on is the final breathing and that’s a tough one, to hold my pelvis forward without using my core/abs.
But I’ll keep trying!
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4477Hi, Amy – I’m doing fabulously! Today will be Day 22.
I might be up for a 60-day, continuing on after March because I feel so wonderful, although my motivation for doing March was typically my golf season starts in April and golf takes soooo much time.
But, of course, you don’t need me to succeed in any challenge! I’ll be here reading your updates to encourage whatever you’re up for!
Bonnie
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4456Well, it’s funny, really, but I forgot my cloth – kind of on purpose – yesterday and today and didn’t miss it a bit. Ha! And I’ve been dutifully carrying one with me to class for probably five years.
I was at the front right of the class, my favourite spot, so I can see the side of me and make sure my pelvis is tucked. But I swear, once class starts everyone else disappears, so I didn’t notice the girl next to me was doing a lot of wiping and swiping with her cloth, but about half way through the teacher walked right in front of us and said very loudly to the girl next to me, Do you have something wrong with your eyes? She replied no, they’re okay. The teacher said, Well, you have a lovely practice but you’ve got to stop all that wiping! You’re in the front, people will be following you – you’ve got to stop wiping!
I thanked my lucky stars I didn’t have my little cloth! Good teacher, though. I just love, love, love my new studio. You don’t get away with a thing, every posture must be close to perfect form.
in reply to: Pelvic Tilt made ALL the difference! #4449Jeez, with all this ab work I’m doing, I found I couldn’t sit comfortably and read my book last night. Something is poking or hurts right underneath my last rib, but closest to the top, inside, if that makes any sense. I kept trying to sit up straight to relieve the pressure. I hope this is going to go away soon! Is it just new muscles forming there or does anyone have any idea with it’s hurting?
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4442I was thinking about that and you in yoga, yesterday, Gabrielle. (okay, so I had a monkey brain yesterday.)
I thought, no cloth – what next! my water will disappear and then the last straw, my clothes!
Then I started to imagine doing this yoga naked and I almost started giggling in class ……
In actuality, I probably could do it without a cloth, without water, or without clothes. yikes!
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4437We have the rest of our lives to do yoga – that’s the beauty of it!
It’s not like a sport where suddenly you can’t keep up, you can’t hit as far…
I am looking forward to aging and feeling good!
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4427Oh, geez! It’s my one safety net/distraction left… hmphhhh….
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4418Sarah:
Re the sweating and not being able to hold onto your feet: I bring a facecloth with me to each class. I pick it up after “party time” and tuck it into the back of my shorts, so most of it is hanging out. I just quietly put my hands behind me and dry my hands on it before Standing Head to Knee and Standing Bow. Then I toss it down just before Balancing Stick. Tucking it into the back of my shorts avoids unnecessary moving around or bending forward to dry my hands on my floor towel.
It works perfectly for me with a minimum amount of movement.
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4381You’re right, 26, Day 8 is done. I just got back. I left home in the sunshine and now it’s snowing a blizzard! 🙁
Holy moly, I don’t know how you manage to get to ANY yoga classes while working three jobs! I only work half a job and it’s wonderful, I must say, to be able to do that. Of course, you’re lovely and young, I’m a tad older, so I’ve already done my time of working hard.
Sounds like you might have to back off a bit on your hip and take it easier. No need to push, you’ve got your whole life to do yoga…
Have a great week!
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #4374ufatbasted – 03 March 2009 04:01 PM
When I move my hands over my head sweat flies off them.
My shorts are soaked and dripping and the towel on my mat is soaked.I’ve become very careful with my hand movements to avoid spraying those around me with sweat!!
Oh, UFB, thank the lord you are aware of it! Nothing worse than people flinging sweat in all directions.
