in reply to: Hot Yoga At Home #9981
You most certainly can and many do! (Including us!)
If you choose not to practice in heat, then it does help to be very vigorous in Pranayama and Half Moon to get the heta into your body.
But … “yoga is yoga” and despite the many claimed benefits of the heat (some of which have a deal of dubious pseudo-science to them!), just doing the yoga poses and paying attention to your body will of course be beneficial.
You will notice a difference without the heat & humidity of course and it may even feel as if you don’t stretch quite so much – so it pays to be aware of what is going on in your body.
If you do want to include heat (and humidity) then generally you will need something better than a typical home heater – they are usually regulated to switch off below the sorts of temperatures we like, for safety reasons.
There are a ton of threads on here about practicing at home and also setting up with heat – just use the search function and you’ll find them – and you can also read about Gabrielle’s “Home Practice Kit” product here:

in reply to: Hot Yoga When You're Sick #9967Hello sticky!
Yes it would generally be considered safe if it’s “just a cold” and/or you are over the hump – in fact the humidity alone is usually considered beneficial in moving it along and facilitating better breathing (asthmatics are recommended to have humid environment for example).
From a yoga studio point of view, it’s probably considered good “yoga etiquette” to stay away in the initial stages of anything viral, since we are all huffing and puffing each other’s air in a closed environment.
Some people also find it dodgy if you come in with tissues and sneeze all over the place, though I’m personally not so bothered by that … unless they are next to me haha!
But in terms of congestion – it’s the bets thing for you IMO (and I went back to yoga as soon as I possibly could after contracting pneumonia in 2008 – very helpful indeed).
Hope that helps!

in reply to: Shoulder injury still #9928Thanks Beverly – yes I’m sure I’ll be the same in respect to missing my Dad 🙁
Thanks for the info about how you are moving your arms – that certainly shows you are starting from the right place and not unwittingly doing anything that might exacerbate the issue.
I’ll make sure to point Gabrielle here as soon as we next speak!
in reply to: Shoulder injury still #9926Ooops – sorry Beverly that your post in August slipped us by. We’ve had a family bereavement (with an illness leading up that we first heard about on August 22) where I lost my father just recently which has meant that I’m in the UK and Gabrielle has her hands full in Australia.
Nonetheless, we will get to this asap for you.
The “can’t” part of the PTs advice seems odd – but for sure there will be modifications we will be able to suggest, as well as asking a few questions about “how” you are raising your arms as this can make a huge difference to the stress on the shoulder joint.
I’ll let Gabrielle address that since she is the technical genius for shoulders!
Once again, I apologize that your initial post was not responded too 😉
in reply to: Foggy Vision After Hot Yoga #9847Hello jrbauer01 (and welcome to the forum!).
Yes this is something I also experience, especially when there is high humidity in the room (more than 50%).
I believe it is dryness and rather than use drops, I actually go and douse my eyes quite a few times in the sink and that seems to relieve it.
It seems to be slightly aggravated when my practice is irregular, which probably emphasizes the dryness issue (ie acclimatization needs to re-occur) so I also think it might be that the eyes are getting more salty sweat in their vicinity, causing the eye to self-clean more aggressively during class, which might mean they need more soothing later?
But for me, soothing them after class a few times with water (in the first hour after class) seems to work.
They get a bit crusty too when this happens – not sure if you notice that too?
Hope that helps!
Robert
(Being short-sighted and wearing glasses I find this annoying at times too!)
in reply to: Why can't I see any of the posts in the forum? #9782Ooops – sorry about that, we are introducing & testing some new functionality and it broke without us noticing (administrators couldn’t see it was broken!).
Thanks for letting me know – it’s all fixed 😉
Let me know if you still have trouble – just reply to this notification.

in reply to: My iPad app is not working #9765Quick followup – just in case you haven’t seen it yet, John has replied to your support request over at https://getsatisfaction.com/carvegybe/topics/audio_is_not_working
(Apparently he had already replied but the comment didn’t get posted … I believe him, John’s a good guy!)
Let me know how you get on and we’ll get this sorted out for you asap.
Thanks!
in reply to: My iPad app is not working #9758Thanks for letting me know Eagerbeaver – I’ll chase John up right now, I’m sorry about that, you shouldn’t have to ask twice!
Thanks for your patience 😉
in reply to: Master Class #9755Thanks Eagerbeaver!
That’s a great plan to be working on the “locked knee” & the breath – that will get you a long way 😉
If you have any questions, feel free to ask here (or email directly – only for Hot Yoga MasterClass owners!).
Re: the tutorial videos – in fact many moons ago, we used to produce them as a monthly download, but due to overwhelming demand for convenience and to pick and choose, we turned them into DVDs. Apologies for any confusion!

in reply to: Master Class #9753Hi Eagerbeaver – thanks for the feedback!
According to my records, you’ve had the MasterClass package for one week now.
Reading it is one thing … but the application of the correct techniques and correction of mistakes lasts a long time!
For example, the Manual is used as the required reading for our Teacher Training, and even though all participants have “read” the Manual prior to attending, you’d be surprised how many things even they miss … so I’m confident you’ll easily get your value out of it as you apply the material.
In that respect we recommend you focus on a specific pose at a time ie Chapter by Chapter (in any order you wish!).
That Pose Tutorial you received was a special “limited time bonus offer” that ended July 2 – and they ship separately (you should have received an email about this at the time of purchase, please check junk mail!).
The DVD normally sells for $29.95 (+ shipping), so that adds more value for sure … I’m sorry to say you won’t be receiving one per month though, I’m not sure where you got that idea haha!!
There are plenty of people who say the opposite to you by the way (the package is cheap at the price!) – you can read reviews submitted by others here:
So stick with it and you’ll unlock way more value as you go!

in reply to: My iPad app is not working #9746Hello Eagerbeaver – I’m sorry to hear about the hassle with the iPad audio 🙁
While this issue is not common, a handful of people have experienced it and as far as we are aware, every single one has been solved with a combination of settings (it seems to be something to do with a recent toggling of sound settings when the latest iOS & iPad 3 was rolled out). It’s quite odd that it affects sound on our app while others on the iPad still produce sound.
Please take a look over at our iPad app support site and try the options suggested there by John (the developer) – I’ll email John and point to this post as well in case you cannot fix it – please post your issue over on the official support site!

Let me know how you get on – you are welcome to email us directly about this issue 😉

in reply to: Bikram Yoga and Philosophy #9698I’m sorry for the delay. Gabrielle has been running a Teacher Training program in Costa Rica for the last 4 weeks and has a backlog of forum posts to attend to.
She will be travelling over the next 3 days and will probably not get to this post until Monday next week.
In the meantime I will move it to a more appropriate place – and recommend if you haven’t done so already, please use the search function in this forum (for “scoliosis”) where you will most certainly find more threads.

in reply to: Bulging Discs #9693Hi again – I’m sorry to hear that, that’s not a good outcome!
Unfortunately finding these modifications online isn’t possible in our experience (we’re about the only destination where you can find this sort of information – or at least ask questions specific to hot & Bikram yoga technical issues). In some studios (sadly) modifications are frowned upon …
It’s one reason why Gabrielle wrote & published the Hot Yoga MasterClass in the first place, in order to provide some more technical information about how to stay safe (including for those with different body shapes; restrictions; injuries etc).
I’ve already asked Gabrielle to take a look at this as soon as she is able … hopefully we can at least provide help for you here 😉

in reply to: Bulging Discs #9685Hi poison4evr!
Just a quick note – Gabrielle is currently in the middle of running Teacher Training in Costa Rica and although she has seen this post, she might not get to it in time for your class.
Of course, make your situation known to your instructor and don’t do anything that feels wrong for your neck.
Be aware it’s not just the floor series that will work your neck – the very first breathing exercise, “Pranayama Breathing” requires your head to slowly drop backwards on an exhale. There are modifications for this, which hopefully your instructor will know. If not, stay tuned …
Take it easy, I’m sure you know your body [neck!] well enough not to push it – and you should be fine.
Rabbit is another “kettle of fish” – and even regulars can get this wrong (seriously, we’ve seen it for ourselves with students with more than a few years practice). If it were me I’d probably skip Rabbit, or at the very least, not bring my head to the floor.
Hopefully Gabrielle will be able to point you in the right direction shortly …
Hope that helps and enjoy your first class, even with these issues, it’s well worth it in our opinion!
in reply to: Single Pose Demonstration #9684Hello Wallaroo – I apologize for the delayed response to this!
At the moment we have no plans to introduce video demos of poses – instead we spent some considerable time and effort putting together “Pose Tutorials” for many of the poses. These used to be accessible as part of a now discontinued Private Members Club, but we found more people wanted them on DVD … so here they are:
https://www.hotyogadoctor.com/index.php/store/DVDs
There is one on Dandayamana Janushirasana of course (probably our most popular Pose Tutorial actually!), and the idea is to break down the pose into all the component forms and to examine how to correct the common mistakes in even more detail!
https://www.hotyogadoctor.com/index.php/store/109/Standing-Head-To-Knee-Dandayamana-Janushirasana
In respect to video generally though, it is possible that we’ll introduce more videos in the future, it’s just that there are no concrete plans for now – it can be expensive and time-consuming to get the production quality that we would want.
And finally – if you are willing to describe your challenges here on this forum, we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction 😉
in reply to: bowed legs and balance #9678Great, thanks Alex!
I spoke to Gabrielle about your question and they may use it as a focusing point for issues such as this in about 5 days time at Teacher Training (when they begin to cover standing balancing poses).
In the meantime, your focus should definitely NOT be on getting to “stages 3 or 4” in head to knee for example, but working on the foundational balance and setup.
Concentrating on tightening the quadriceps (even when you are standing in a queue) will help to make your stance strong, making sure your kneecap is not only pulled up, but that it is inline with your foot (ie pointing directly along the foot) and that your foot is perpendicular to the mirror.
From there, we recommend that you don’t “bend down and pickup the foot” but rather, bring your knee up first (still standing up vertically) THEN round over and bring your hands together under the foot to clasp them.
This way you will really work on your strength, poise and balance.
I hope that’s a start! In pretty much all the standing balancing poses, it’s all in the setup, and going slowly and deliberately to go further and with more stability, really pays off.
We’ll be back again soon – in the meantime, if you have further questions, just post-away!
Robert
in reply to: bowed legs and balance #9676Hi Alex – well done and welcome to the forum! As you can probably guess by her signature, Gabrielle is currently running Teacher Training in Costa Rica (until June 16) and *may* not get to this as promptly as she normally does!
However … it’s entirely possible that the large contingent of teacher-trainees (which includes some existing teachers) AND a handful of Gabrielle’s graduates from last year (who are also on site) might wish to contribute … which brings me to …
What exactly is your question hehe?
What specific issue would like like help with first? (in Standing Head To Knee I assume?)
Thanks!
Robert
in reply to: Hot Yoga Doctor App #9674Thanks Melissa – we are continuing to monitor the market for an Android version. So far, the demand is so small it doesn’t warrant the time we need to invest in porting it over 🙁
Shame because Gabrielle has an Android phone too!
We’ll certainly be letting everyone know as soon as plans are under way!
Thanks for your feedback 🙂

in reply to: Yoga Poses #9672Hello Marilyn – do you mean the link at the top of the pose photos that says “Watch a pose clinic on this pose”?
If so, this is designed behavior – the Pose Clinics are available as purchasable DVDs (for most Poses, not all) and so you are redirected to the store – however, I do notice that I need to update the links as since we upgraded our store, I can now redirect you to the specific DVD in question!
You can see them all here:
https://www.hotyogadoctor.com/index.php/store/DVDs
I hope that makes more sense now – let me know if it was something different that you were experiencing and I’ll do my best to troubleshoot 😉
Robert
in reply to: Hot Yoga Doctor App #9660Hi Amalthea – ooops sorry – no need to apologize! We’re not bothered about YOU mentioning what you heard at all – it’s just that it is a shame it goes on (from other studios) and we make a point of not joining in since it’s not a game we wish to play!
Practicing those long Sanskrit pose names is fun isn’t it?! … Great way to impress your friends hehe
Namaste,
Robert
in reply to: Hot Yoga Doctor App #9658Hello Amalthea! Thanks for the lovely feedback – Gabrielle is traveling right now (heading over to Costa Rica for our annual 4-week Teacher Training event!) so she won’t see this for a little while yet.
We generally don’t participate in the “politics” as it is incomprehensible to us why those who have influence in the yoga community choose to make judgments based on inaccuracy or hearsay. We believe in continuing to help those who need help, information and transparency!
In regard to the App and the choice of classes, it’s somewhat personal actually. Many studios who run 60-minute classes simply run 1 set of each of the poses used in the popular bikram classes.
We do have the choices in our DVDs – Volume One is all double-sets, Volume Two is all single sets – thus catering to all preferences!
https://www.hotyogadoctor.com/index.php/store/5/Hot-Yoga-MasterClass-2-x-DVD-Pack
When it came to personal preference, both Gabrielle and I prefer the double-set 60min version. Somehow it’s more satisfying and allows for the extra stretch in the second set – and possibly assisting with PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) for improved range of motion as the stretch receptors and body respond to the second set.
We were limited to space with the app (as you know, it’s already a BIG app) as we wanted it to be able to function with no internet or cell connection required – therefore squeezing in video footage meant we had to make a choice with what to go with 😉
I hope that helps – Gabrielle I’m sure will comment when she has recovered from the travel and can check in with the Forum!
in reply to: Practising in the hotel room #9645Yes, well said Andrea!
I’ll add in my own experience too, having practiced in many a hotel room and also on holiday; in the guest bedroom of my Mum & Dad’s house … it does feel weird not sweating (and maybe even not quite as “loose” as when there is full-on heat?) but it’s definitely still beneficial!
What’s more, it keeps your “yoga credit” topped up … so when you do get back to a heated room, you’ll be in a similar place to when you left it.
“Better to do, than not” … Yoda (actually he didn’t say that at all, but I think it would sound great if he did!)
Blushe, I take it you managed to get the audio sorted out OK then?
Thanks,
Robert
in reply to: No audio on iPad app #9629Hello Blushe – thanks for supporting our App!
I’ve only heard of this once before (and it was resolved) – could I ask you to email our developer, John, who maintains support?
He can be reached at john.alexander AT mac.com
And also via the support site:
http://www.carvegybesoftware.com/home/Support.html
And the specific question is here:
I’ll email John now as well and alert him to your plight!
I’m sure we’ll get it solved shortly 😉
