I am NOT a doctor and would talk to him/her about this but…. in my experience yes Bikram does effect the veins and nerves. I can get tingling in my arms during camel or locust for ex: it sounds (and again not a doctor) like the body is trying to send blood there and fire these nerves that are damaged. The poses are designed to send blood and fire certain parts of the body.
when do you feel the pain ? is it during a specific pose? after class? the next day?
once we narrow it down we may to look at a modifying or taking out a pose

thank you Bonmar (and Gabrielle ) for your wonderful words of encouragement. I too am looking forward to our challenge.
I had a really good session w/ my therapist, going over all the poses. He gave me some new modifications and ideas too!
It was nice to have prof guidance rather than just listening (what I was doing up until our session) I am not super woman know it all and what a relief to hear what I was doing was safe and to get a fresh perspective.
PS I had my x ray and all looks good !!
the biggest risk is that during the fracture the blood vessels may have been damaged. The result is PAIN in my hip, and we would need to do a full replacement (depending on the amount of damage and pain) You CAN”T see this during surgery and the only thing we can do is wait and see. He said the pain comes later once the femur is out of blood and being depleted (about two – three months after the break) There is NOTHING during rehab that will put me more or less at risk … it would have happened when the break occured. Any way on the x ray it would show up like white circles around the ball of my hip. At three weeks I am happy to report NO WHITE showed up !! however it is still a little early to tell. see him again in one month and will keep yo posted

I have gone on Vacation or had times where it just was not possible to do it w/ the heat. II have to tell you… I get A LOT out a ‘cold’ practice too 🙂 No it is not THE SAME…… but the Yoga is like sex , pizza and chocolate, even if it’s bad it’s still pretty good 😉
KIDDING !! but you get my point LOL

I can relate to what you’re saying TOTALY. There are so many good things that start happening and it is such a healing and beautiful practice…. however sometimes its a process to take the ‘struggle out of your practice’ as Gabrielle would say 🙂
From my experience it does sound like your body is struggling in adjusting to the heat. I would ask the studio what conditions they keep the room under. It could be too hot or it may take a bit more time for your body to adjust. Are these sypmtoms new or have you had them from day one?
you’ve been at it for a while so I was curious… if it’s new… it could be a change in your system (again a GOOD thing) the yoga puts your body chemistry into its natural state. are you pre or post menopausal?
Any way if you get to me w/ more details we can figure this out a bit more…
    I understand your concern though….
I have a genetic disorder that effects my entire endocrine system so I am VERY familiar w/ how the yoga effects your body.
My DOCTOR is stunned at the good things its doing for me. He has assured me that practicing in the 100 degree heat is NOT dangerous if you take the proper precautions.(but also warned against anything above 105) then our bodies are under too much stress trying to reg our core temp
try PRE hydrating (as well as after) and having your electrolytes BEFORE rather than after and that will help 🙂

I wanted to let all know how my first day back in the hot room went …… AWESOME !
I rocked it and did all poses both sets (w/ my modifications of course) I have to tell you though my hip felt ….. surged w/ life 🙂
when I left I felt I could move any where and could feel the blood nourishing and coursing through my whole leg. UNREAL
Not only that but …. I did not feel the need to SLEEP in the afternoon. just rested my leg as needed but that alive feeling stayed w/ me

in the first part of locust only clench the lifting butt cheek 🙂 the opposite is supposed to be relaxed you’re right…. w/ cobra BOTH and the last part of locust BOTH. w/ the standing backbends BOTH
    w/ the chair pose……..
you’re right that that squat is more bulking (the one I mentioned above is more lenthening and better for your body type)
to modify it heres what I would do…… put your arms out an d REALLY get them engaged. w/ the normal stance sit down but…. only as far as you can w/ keeping your back as straight as possible. keep the focus on your arms and leaning back w/ the chest up. For all three poses just keep thinking about those tank top arms your earning for the summer 🙂 does that make sense if you need me to clarify more…. just buzz

Are you referring to the leg lift you would do in the weight room or a yoga pose?

different body types respond to exercise differently ………
If for example you have a pear vs an apple shape
also… how ou metabalize food plays a big role in your exercise response as well… some people handle carbs and some don’t for example. some people can eat and eat and never show and some …. just look at the fridge 🙂
it sounds like you have a body type I am famialr w/ working w/ (i used to be a prof trainer) what I would suggest if you are concerned is lenthening (not streanthening) exercieses for the legs and adding some upper body work to even out the body. I’m not talking about ‘getting big muscles’ up top just toning. you have powerful strong legs (a good thing:) and to complete your beautiful package some upper body light toming would amaze you w/ the results
good luck and if you need ideas let me know
    PS leg lenthening
step WIDE w/ feet slightly pointing out have about a 8-10 lb weight in between centered and squat like in the chair… these are called pliea squats and wil give your strong quads some lenth and shave off in the hips
also any glut work will really help all the locus/cobra poses and leg lifts are WONDERFUL 🙂 and keep that but clenched like two little coconuts !!!

it sounds like the impact is new your body!! weight bearing is good in many aspects but….. as they say everything in mod and all that…
I would still do it but mabe cut the amount of times and sub w/ weights and walking and see how you feel.
it could be too not that your jumping and stuff but how your landing and if your doing w/ good alignment and posture? just stuff to think about 🙂

in reply to: Strain question #4239

did you get in in the studio? or is this new just at home? are you using mirrors? these qustions may help get to the bottom of the cause
no…. it is not strange and I know the strain you speak of it ‘sounds’ like a hip alignment issue but…. once you reply mabey we can figure it out better..
    good luck!!!!

I love how you added the note about emotions…. If I’m processing something I am DRAINED. I may not even know what is going on untill I hit the hot room then ….. the AH HA moment comes and reveals what I need to learn..

that sounds reasonable …….. if have a GOOD athletic base
I used to be a per trainer and can tell you that if and when you do PICK it up ……… you can and will be able to but not sustain it for long
w/o suffering from overtraining and burnout.
even superior athletes periodize their intense seasons w/ light ones because it is just NOT doable LONG term.
the plan you have now is a good one that is realistic …… but also very advanced so still pay attention to your body and watch for signs of fatigue and overtraining
you may need to once and while take a half week or so off to just chill.

good luck and let me know

PS all the benefits we get from working hard actualy come when we’re resting 🙂
one thing though I would change is keeping your afternnon workouts to NO longer than 1.5 hours….. I didn’t see 2 -4 30
that is WAY too much in one session
40 of weights and 40 of cardio is about what our bodies can do any more and you are just breaking tissue down and being counter productive

I am an athlete 6 -7 miles a day weights and yoga ………
I found I did not have to stop my other activites but did need to scale back to incorperate it all in
what worked for me I found was two things in one day w/ one day of total rest a week
    cardio / yoga
    weights/ cardio
    cardio /yoga
    weights yoga
    cardio/ yoga
    off
    just an example

    Thanks gabrielle

I will keep you posted on my recovery… and rest assured … I’m RESTING!!!
I take two naps a day, put my foot up after dinner as well for an hour and am sleeping at night for like 10+ hours (unheard of for me)
You KNOW how active I am!! I just laugh though that one week after I’m still more active than some that have no limits 🙂
I went for a walk in the morn shopping after lunch and was on my elliptical before dinner… too funny
My pain is slight and I’m almost off all pain meds. I don’t NEED the blood thinners as they are to prevent blood clotting from lying all day (which I’m certainly not) but again …… just following all orders.
OH! PS before all this happened…. I was due for my quarterly hormone check due to my turners syndrome (the endocrine genetic disorder I have) wanted to share…….
    since I began my practice….
we’ve lowered my thyroid meds in half
I’ve gained TWO inches on my bust lost one inch on my wist and gained one inch on my hips
the angles of my entire body are rounding and more womanly
I have beautiful straight pain free legs instead of bowed w’ knock knees that hurt when I ran
I don’t need my orthodics and ……… I can sit for hours w/o a stiff back and body
my bowels are like CLOCK work w/ NO bloating and I could just go on and on …. anyway here is what the doctor said …..
all my hormones were right in healthy range (instead of low) and that my once limp dead ovary is starting to produce estrogen on its own.

I too had to change my practice due to my new daughter!! I can’t (obviously) get to the studio as much as before.
I wanted to assure you ….. I LOVE my home practice:)
I have gotten MANY benefits and though the practice is different it is wonderful. The focus and quiet is incredible and I have seen major improvements in many aspects. I only caution you to do your research and practice the form and feeling in the poses to do them CORRECTLY. It is a little easier to get injured w/o the visual instruction. If you are advanced enough in you practice though to feel comfortable you can see so much!!!! I still do go to the studio about once a week or week and half.
    GOOD LUCK

in reply to: Heat reaction #4153

is the reaction a rash? a general feeling of heat? can u give more?
I know when I go more I get a small rash due to clogged sweat glands. A toning/cooling solution and not ‘rubbing dry’ helps me and it goes away after a few classes of the increased schedual

I understand your reluctance to get tested….. however try to remember that we are not superwomen or experts and that asking for help is OK! My concern in testing the waters by going back ti class is this
    1. either you will feel great the first class and keep going back only to fall back very soon
    2. because you haven’t been in a bit you will find it hard and assume your body is not ready so…… don’t go back when you would be able.
I know for myself (though sometimes hard to hear) having the truth and guidance from another seems to take the weight and guessing off my shoulders. to surrender and say I don’t know is very relieving for me.

I have heard this lots… I believe it has to do w/ a hormonal imbalance causing a weakened immune system. My advice would be to stop for a while to let your body even out and go to your doctor to get ALL your levels checked. I have an endocrine disorder and am familiar w/ the hormones of the body and how the practice effects them. (I have had to have them checked every 4-6 months since 12 years)
ask for thyroid estrogen DHEA cortisol and electrolytes
good luck and I hope that hepls.
PS MANY women in THAT stage 🙂 find that the they need a break from practice and know that my doctor is FASCINATED by my success and results and that this is not means to an end per say. Just that the heat and menopause don’t mix for some.

I have taken a bit of a rest w/ a maintenance practice and am thinking about a challenge myself…. going to see doctor today (to get some levels tested) will talk to him then look inward and feel what is right for me. I will let you know
