in reply to: sugar sensitivies and hot yoga #6888
when you come out of yoga (or any intense exercise) your body is on hyper drive and so when you eat a fast acting sugar it spikes your levels which then causes them to crash …. good luck and fuel body with slow acting sugars in future
as far as your tummy goes …. prep for that olympian metal LOL !!!! your instincts were right. Focus on tight abs and tilting your pelvis under. Think of a long and straight spine. YEs your strength will come and help with this IF you pracice… this means trying not to pop up and slowly working on the length of time it takes you come back up. so try going slow as long as you can also dont rest on your heels at the bottom make sure your legs are engaged the WHOLE time. good luck
in reply to: 115 degrees #6870it could be too where the thermostat is placed???
in reply to: Breathing Exercises #6861have you heard why or what exercises? ,….. how could breathing be harmful?
in reply to: Throwing up after class #6845I know if I have ANY artificial sweeteners including stevia i can get this just a heads up but I would look at what you are eating and any changes that may have occur in either practice or teaching frequency ect
for me I found using a gentle aloe skin toner after washing (again with something mild) then dont forget to moisturize !!!!
This helped keep my pours free and clear after class and calmed my skin down. when you do wash tone and moisturize never RUB but dab as that would irritate the skin good luck and let me knowin reply to: Bikram Yoga is Not Good for Everyone #6819it depends on too the studio you go to…. I was discouraged from modifications at one …….. and welcomed with open arms at another ! Today I can practice at my studio in ways that honor where I am in my body. I love it
in reply to: New Tattoo #6795give it just a couple of days …. you dont need a full week like going into hot tub or swimming but it is still pretty moist in there LOL I have gotten many and have had no problems. just avoid touching it and letting it rub on mat or towel ect. when you are done just dab it carefully.
where is it???in reply to: Healthy women over 50 and Hot Yoga #6779the more you do the better for you!!!!! go girl
yes…. very healthy bp bonmar 🙂
in reply to: chest pain #6739I don’t want to say it is …. or is not…. something as I am NOT a doctor. However it ‘sounds’ like a soft tissue injury that I would not be too worried about in terms of perm or serious damage. HOwever having said that I would take a break and wait for the pain to go away before attempting yoga again to give the tissue time to heal… you could also head to a massage therapist,
PS if it does not get better with rest ice and love then I would not hesitate and see your doc good luckin reply to: How hot is it??!! #6730I have always had this problem no matter what studio I went to. Ive been to two in my home town and one out of town and all three had very different temps at different times. I have been to both in town on a reg basis and found varying conditions as well as the studio out of town twice…. once was cold the next I sweat like a stuffed pig from the beginning breathing and I dont sweat easy LOL Thats why I love my sauna I KNOW what i’m going to walk into. though I do love the studios too…. both have their good points and are just different.
in reply to: Night Sweats #6709thats the point…. where I started and where I am now… having a body that body IS functioning better LOL
in reply to: Other exercise with Bikram #6708I dont think there is one right or wrong answer here… everyone is different and has different needs. Some do just yoga and love it, while others feel the need to branch out to other forms of activity as well. I LOVE my workouts and feel best when I have a balance of cardio weights and yoga. Listen to your body and it will tell you what is right for you.
PS that goes for the food too ;-P just honor the messages you get from yourself and you cant go wrongin reply to: Night Sweats #6706I have a genetic disorder …. my body does not produce hormones naturally. I take them synthetically and since practicing we’ve lowered my dose 3x ! my bust went from 26 to 30 (wow) my waist 22.5 to 21 and my hips 28 to 29 talk about a new figure !!! my one dead ovary is being pumped and stimulated 🙂
My doctor is both supportive and fascinated by my practice and its results…… he asked me for the studio # LOL and often gets me to demonstrate a pose. My legs and hips have also changed structure i used to be quite bow legged and now have straight beautiful legsOUCH!!! I feel your pain and just wanted to agree with your thoughts about not being warmed up. I also find in cooler classes that my focus though is there and may SEEM as strong is just in reality not there as much. It IS very possible that due to the lack of heat you were maybe feeling less attentive and even a bit slack? I know thats my experience anyway…. :red: GOOD LUCK on recovery and yes make sure you are feeling NO pain before returning
in reply to: Heat Exhaustion (Follow-up to extreme thirst) #6684I see, yes that all makes sense now. thanks for the update. I’m sure with proper attention if you wanted you could return to you HOT practice, but I leave that with you. I too have to be very careful about levels and get them checked on a very reg basis. After my last hip surgery my blood levels went from 130 which is a normal red blood count to 70 !!! I also went from a low (but still healthy) BP of 100/70 to 70/60 so I do feel your frustration. I have to take folic acid and get iron injections to bring my blood count up and now things are returning to normal. I am back in the hot room with no adverse effects 🙂 So I just wanted to pass on hope that you can return to your practice when you feel ready. I do take my electrolytes before class and listen to my body (and my doctor!)
in reply to: Heat Exhaustion (Follow-up to extreme thirst) #6678interested in your updates… keep us posted !!! just concerned and thinking of you and if you can give insights into what you think caused it IE: were you drinking enough or pushing too hard made sure you were replacing electrolytes ect
in reply to: Hot Yoga when on the pill #6677good advice all the way around !! I’ve been on the bill since I was 12 years old (I’m 32) …. My body does not produce hormones naturally and is what I take for my therapy. I follow the recommendation of NOT messing with your cycle. I would tell your doc about the discharge too. If your just starting it CAN take some time for your body to adjust but I would def address it,
nice 🙂 love the fun post ! thanks for the idea. It did get me thinking about the things I do tell myself in class both now and in the past. Here how my practice has changed LOL
prev mantra : GRRRRRRRR rock it girl you are awesome yes you can
current mantra : where am I at today?
prev mantra : lets kick it up a notch
current mantra : what are you feeling…. right now?
prev mantra : dont fall dont fall dont fall Sh#^ I fell !!!!!
current mantra : breathe and relax breathe and relax …… concentrate oops!! ok try again here we go breath and relax ….
LOL I just found it funny how my inner voice has changed so much over the years. just thought I would share but seriously if I were to pick out the most used mantra that I say to myself it would be
BE HERE BE NOW breathe and relaxin reply to: Interesting differences between studios… #6637a new studio opened in town 🙂 its a hot yoga studio as opposed to the traditional bikram. I went for a class on the week end …… very interesting HMMM
in reply to: Elbows In Your Back Pocket #6610yes yes and yes…. lol since applying this technique not only has my practice changed but my everyday posture (which lets face it is really the goal is it not…. to enhance life OUT of the yoga room!!) I have two compression fractures in my spine due to osteo fragility and had alway a stiff sore back esp. while sitting for long periods. now I have NO pain full range and a nice bendy relaxed spine. My chiropractor is amazed at the changes in me.
in reply to: Interesting differences between studios… #6567of course dying to know…. where did you go?
in reply to: Is doing Bikram Yoga on carpet at home good or bad? #6553bikram is actually usually done on carpet
in reply to: poses for a beginner #6552not at all… that is why I am saying to just go for it 🙂 if you want to. Hot yoga is a class for beginners and the experienced because as you go along you learn more and go deeper. Each and every pose can be done by anyone at different levels. though your pose may or may not look like the person next to you just do what you can in each pose and learn as you go along. ask the teachers, other students, and come to the forum 😛 to ask questions and get help
