wow… I am both amazed by your story and concerned. Though we all have different health issues and reasons for going to yoga and that some peoples are a lot harder than others, I still think you SHOULD feel good about your practice 🙂 As I said even with how hard it is for you I admire your courage in still going but what does your doctor say about your health and conditions, what did you feel like before you started and what do you feel like now that your practicing and if there IS an improvement focus on that !!!!!! Does your doctor support your practice?

you said too ‘the doctors say surgery is not needed’ ….. what do THEY say is the problem then ? and what was the original injury. what about akward and fixed firm … do these poses bother you and…. where are you in the depth of them? just curious …..

sometimes I can use my outer leg muscles to support me instead of my inner thigh and front of my leg (clenching my quad and lifting my knee cap up) this could cause problems as well as check on your standing leg are you straight???? you could be leaning and putting all your weight on the outside causing extra stress.

WOW how exciting 🙂 I remember my first class……… AHH memories LOL any way to answer you question all I can do is tell you what my experience is and was like in my studio and in class. Try to be there as early as you can be about 20-30 mins before class as this will give you time to fill out forms as mentioned but also ask questions and get settled with out feeling too pressured and rushed.
DRINK WATER and take an electrolyte supplement before or you can drink coconut water during which is a great alternative as it gives you sugar (all natural) and energy you need but also replaces your minerals.
eat light all day before your class I’m not sure what time your planning on attending but I feel best on a very light ( but not totally empty ) stomach. I usually do fruit and liquid calories only before a class (about an hour or so before)
SHOWERS…… the whole class id rushing off to be the first in line and don’t fall for that trap. Lye on your mat and relax for as long as you can. enjoy the quiet time 🙂 then change, go home and shower….. or do shower there, but I always just wash off my body taking about 3 mins tops. I dont bother with my hair as I put it up and keep it up after saving my REAL shower for later.
Good luck and I expect a full play by play on Sunday !!!!!!!!!!

if a teacher addresses me in class and i dont agree or understand i just ignore it ….. I have a thing about not talking during class so I dont take the time to argue. then after class if I feel it warranted I will talk to to the teach about it. If a teacher came up to TOUCH me on the other hand i would then give a firm but polite no I dont feel comfortable being touched

the only way to really know what is for you is to try it out and see what you like and what feels good in your heart. …. I LOVE my hot yoga and my sauna.( I do cardio training now in my sauna too ) not on the same day of course but…. I feel energized and full of blood/oxygen yet relaxed and calm. My sister on the other hand can not stand it. She went for three months three times a week and just felt sick the whole time. She felt like she was doing her body more harm than good and sticks with cool regular yoga. to each their own… but you have to try something for yourself to know.

you could choose to take a non heated beg yoga class first, pick up up some dvds or…… you COULD just go for it lol and head straight to the hot studio

I think too there is or may be a diff between ‘cleansing’ and a true ‘detox’ that is a good point Gabrielle about the circulation and other effects to your body. I know I also feel really good after a good cry like an emotional rain and though I may ‘feel’ better and like I’ve processed and cleaned house ……. the issue is still there to a degree.
I find the same thing after a good class and sweat. It feels good but like you’ve just cleaned house and there ARE many good things going on……… but actually rid of toxins???????? maybe it helps bring blood flow and better function to those organs that do detox the body?

so it has been over one month and yesterday was my first class back 🙂 it was so awesome !!!!!!!! It feels amazing to be back. I was very careful and modified what I need to but i felt the same benifits out of each pose. I was dripping in the sweat which felt great and came out floating. I felt NO stress pain or tension in my hip during or after class and look forward to being back.

very good point Gabrielle. I found that when I collapse and relax my feet my hip is not in alignment and therefore not having proper support and stability. this would often cause me problems as well.

half the fun is getting there 🙂 I have been practicing for about three years and my journey has been amazing. My yoga has changed SOOOOOOO much and due to that my life as well. for me its no longer about what I can or cant do but what I FEEL like in each pose and after class. It is great to have goals and focus points but yoga is not about pressure to get there so be gentle on yourself too.

my biggest and easiest mistake ,……. and the one that caused me the most problems was triangle. make sure you are not collapsed into your joint (its not meant to take that much pressure) but that your muscles are supporting you. I also have to be careful in eagle and just go deep enough to feel a slight pull but no tension.

I know it is a total back bend but…… when I lift and lengthen (as gabrielle says) my spine before I go back I can feel a nice healthy traction and stretch. esp through my shoulder blades and in my upper back. also yes if your face is red you ARE NOT BREATHING LOL try to always focus and keep a steady breath to help your body tell you where your limits are before you injure yourself.

nice to see you aboard 🙂 I have to agree with everyone about not being judged. in my class there young tight bodies , older flabbier ones and everything in between. no one pays attention to anything but their own practice……. or are too worried about what you think and are just as nervous LOL
I broke my hip over a year ago and have had four surgeries …… i have to modify some poses yes and def. have to be mindful of not putting STRESS on my joint but can still have a very nice and benifical practice. GOOD LUCK

do what works and feels right for your level of fitness and interests. I LOVE going to the gym and found I did not want to not go or give it up. Do what you can though too. some people would find it hard to do it all so find your balance and what is fun for you. for ME it looked like this
    yoga / weights
cardio / yoga rotating ect with one day off on sunday of complete rest. now keep in mind I have been training for years too

I would also carry some drinks at work or for times when you cant eat. going to health food store and getting some powder mixes are the cheapest way but you also buy pre made things like boost ect

he dug back further in my x rays and we can see how my head is starting to flatten. treating possible blood loss to head of femur with an iv bone drug. hoping it will work and my hip will heal. a chance i will need a full hip replacement. still very sore and healing. can see mild improvements but………. go in for treatment soon and will keep you all posted.
