in reply to: Doing pranayama pose outside the hot yoga studio #4953
I too often throw out a breathing exercise or pose if I need a sanity break LOL It helps reground and center myself. I also have done some experimenting in the gym steam and sauna rooms. I found it depended on time wich room I used but …. If I only a few mins the steam room was the best way to get a good deep quick sweat! The breathe in the HUMID air was … AWESOME! LOVED IT.
(my new gym does not have one 🙁 ) The sauna though was a nice way to stretch. I would go in a just fold in a long deep stretch. More like the yin practice Gab has touched on in some posts… good luckin reply to: Hormones and Hot Yoga #4940thank you for the post back … i was humbled and honored. i think of yoga as a NO CHOICE situation… my daily physio so to speak. i KNOW with out it i would be sunk, thats what keeps me going
in reply to: About this balancing stick posture #4925NAILED it !!! thanks so much for all your helpful tips. I can stay up in this pose now and feel the length and stretch (not to mention the muscle work needed … abs of steel or what!?) LOL thanks again and talk soon
in reply to: Working into this pose!!! #4924I have been struggling and studying this pose for a bit too. I found after I broke my hip this one went from no problem to OH MY!!
I lost so much muscle tone in the thigh and range of motion it became very difficult to even lock my knee let alone bend over to pick up my foot. Four months and I am happy to report that I am now strong in locking my knee again and can progress to stage three on both legs.
That being said it took A LOT of outside strength work and practice as well. The pose clinic reviewed again again and… again did not hurt either 😉
Thanks GABin reply to: hip and bones update #4922Thanks for your input… yes Robert I can FEEL the scrape scrape scape on the side of hip when I put my hand on it while walking !!!
Too being SO tiny and the pins being sized for adults (they had to put me together in a hurry and thats what they had) the Doc told me I would be VERY sensitive to them. I will just be patient and keep up w/ my healing until they give the OK to get them out. thanks agin .
PS we lowered my thyroid meds again!!in reply to: Hormones and Hot Yoga #4917just wondering how it is going now?!!! I have been keeping up to date and curious about you situation. I have an endocrine disorder called turners syndrome the effects ALL my hormones. (among other things) yoga has brought my estrogen up and we’ve lowered my thyroid meds three times now!!! I know for me the yoga is certainly my daily therapy for my hip as well as my other levels. Keep me posted and look forward to hearing from you
This is a good one !!! I would like to add here other ways in which I gage my practice in terms of heat. One is of course how much am I sweating? How thirsty and/or ‘hot’ do I feel inside? Can I easily maintain my breath and focus in postures? Here is the BIG one though for me…. how is my recovery time!!!!? After I get up and leave the room I should feel relaxed energized and strong and maintain that feeling. If I am drained, cranky, tired or anything like that I know It was too hot!!! (for me 😉 )
yes this is SO true!!! I practice at 105 40% and find this PERFECT. even at 60 % same temp I CAN do it but….. it does not feel right and leaves me too dry (I just sweat too much to keep up w/ the replacing of fluids and electrolytes)
in reply to: Exhausted after Class #4897ah yes the science of that can be a hard one. I had a REALLY hard time until my doctor and I came up w/ a system together. (trying to figure out on my own left me OUT) I usually take two pills per class one before and one after and drink about 3 a day. I have 0 recovery time now and yes that energizer bunny keeps going and going LOL
in reply to: Yoga Competitions #4894what a cool story!!! I LOVE to hear how this yoga has changed people.
in reply to: I did it !!! #4860Thanks… I did feel awesome and still so! I too had THE best practice ever the next morn! Holy *^%$ I was amazed and could not wait to get the the next posture to see what would happen LOL I did four class in 24 hour period and beat my oncoming cold, the tight pain in my hip gone and IBS relief. (not to mention on SO many levels how much better I felt. I am thinking…. another back to back on Mon …… any one in?
in reply to: How necessary is the heat ? #4858well put Bonmar…. even when I was laid up on the porch too drained to move after the first few classes I STILL LOVED it 🙂 Knowing how good it felt on a diff level than ANY thing else I have ever done good luck exploring a whole new world!
in reply to: How necessary is the heat ? #4848I would to say too in reassuring you ( as someone who does love the heat ) that there HAVE been times in my practice I could not do it in the hot room. During times of travel and after surgery when I broke my hip. I have gotten many learnings as well from my times doing a cooler practice. One being patience …… and letting go of ego and expectations. Not to mention the still calming effect and physical benefits. I was in a VERY stressful situation traveling once. My husband (after rocking me and holding me while I cried) told me to go to a private room and practice…. WOW I came out like a new person and gained SO much from that time. so yes… and good luck
in reply to: Is it quad flexibility or something else? #4839I do believe it is a hip issue. good luck it will come
in reply to: KNEE PAIN FROM BIKRAM YOGA #4838well said Gab…. it does sound like a probable alignment / form issue. w/ the proper instruction i have no dout you will be back in no time +
in reply to: Weight Gain #4830OHHH one other note quickly…. how is your bladder? Are you running to the bathroom a lot?
a poss sign of low sodium from all the sweating and would cause a weight gain from your body holding on to all the salt in your diet. (even though you would be peeing like CRAZY you would have some water weight and be bloated)in reply to: Weight Gain #4829I can understand why you would be so frustrated!!! I can perhaps shed some light and hope on what MAY be going on. Fist make note that you have not made other changes in your diet and routine (which you already stated as being around the same as before)
Second…. you’ve shared you are exercising more than you ever really have and the hot room CAN be very challenging to new comers. When your body is under too much stress for what ever reason and in what ever form (physical or mental) our bodies tend to pack on the pound 🙁 this is due to the hormones that stress releases. Here is my advice (keeping in mind my thoughts are only mer guessing at ONE poss. reason)
1 look at your nutrition and make sure it is balanced and enough
2 BREATHE in through the nose and out through the nose in class to keep your system calm in the heat and poses.
3 don’t over push yourself!!!!
4 go to class w/ the mind set of relaxing in YOGA class (not going to pound out a workout!)
5. KEEP going !!! Your body WILL catch on and the extra (+) lbs will melt off !!
good luck and keep us posted !in reply to: EXTREMELY nauseous after class #4826sounds like IBS!! have been to a tummy doc?
in reply to: About this balancing stick posture #4821armed w/ my new knowledge i headed off to class……. my stick was SOOO much better!a couple more times and i think i’ll actually ‘get’ this one LOL any way… thanks
in reply to: About this balancing stick posture #4820AWESOME tips!!! I have always had a rough time w/ this one and will try these in class today and let you know
in reply to: EXTREMELY nauseous after class #4819smart water IS a replacement…. but NOT the most efficient out there for sure. I was taking something too and found it not enough for my needs and was actually put on IV overnight (some sweat more eat less salt ect) now I take a pill and cut back on water ( know!) and feel MUCH better. Too tummy upset is also a sign of low blood sodium because your kidney and bowels work together to regulate your levels. I would REALLY get your levels checked and see your doctor about (as Gab has said) other problems. Too she is right in saying it is probably NOT the yoga itself but another variable. GOOD LUCK!!
in reply to: EXTREMELY nauseous after class #4816are you taking electrolytes? are you breathing?
in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4799keeping on trucking and feeling AWESOME!!!!! got all my levels checked on Friday and all was spot on perfect!! I am getting to REALLY love my sauna over the studio though which is funny. I do love the people and the event of going however… I find the instructors repetitive, the studio conditions unreliable (sometimes way too cold or hot), and on Monday someone moved the towel off my mat and placed their hand on my brand new sticky mat!!!!! ( a HUGE pool of not my sweat on my NEW mat!!! ) LOL
any way it’s all good and I do like the change of pace. I’ll keep you all posted and yes feeling SO much better.in reply to: March 30-day challenge #4763almost done my third week when…. a huge problem came up (related to other health issues) and I ended up in the hospital overnight. I went to my Mom and Dads and had to take almost two weeks off to just let things settle. I am back in the hot room now (Mon was my first day) and feeling GREAT! I am back to my 6x week practice and will keep you posted
