in reply to: shoulder injury #10399
I’ve been meaning to come back to the forum and give an update. The video helped me a lot and I try to use the elbows in the back pocket even outside of class. I have been icing my shoulder every night and the pain has nearly gone away. I can still tweak it though very easily so I’m very careful with it.
Brian, I agree that it’s a good idea to check with an ortho doctor. I had an appt in fact with my doctor to get a referral but the pain started getting so much better, I cancelled it. I’m certainly not opposed to getting an MRI or whatever and even my chiropractor said I should if my shoulder didn’t improve.
Glad you had such a good outcome!
Thanks again to you both for the input.

in reply to: shoulder injury #10365Thanks so much, Gabrielle, I will go watch the video before class this morning!
And I will certainly look at the places in the forum you suggested and let you know how it goes.
Thanks again for your quick response. If I’d gone to class today and not watched the video, my shoulder would probably have been hurting again by this afternoon.

in reply to: shoulder injury #10363Hi Gabrielle,
thanks for your quick response!
In answer to your questions, I try to follow the script very carefully. I do straighten my arms, lock my elbows and squeeze my arms to my ears. I’m not sure if I am trying to go too far back to keep my arms to my ears or if it is better to go as far back as possible.
By standing in savasana, do you mean the stillness between poses? I do stand still and I try to relax my shoulders as much as possible. I also study tai chi and one focus of that is to release the tension from your body, especially the shoulders and arms so I try to always be conscious of that, even in my daily life.
I read, I think on WebMD, that I should raise my arms at about a 30% angle toward the front of from my body, instead of holding them to my side and raising them straight out to the side and up. Do you think that is the best way? In Bikram, we raise our arms a lot so want to do it the best way for me.
Last week I only went to the studio one time, on Tuesday, and took the rest of the week off to ice my arm and shoulder and do some easy PT exercises. It is feeling better this morning and I’m going to go back to class and see how that affects it.
Thanks for the help!

in reply to: Green Smoothie #10301Hi, yes, I do have the same problem but I don’t think it’s entirely the smoothies. I do have one cup of coffe in the mornings and I use Calli tea as my smoothie base. Calli is a gentle cleansing tea I’ve used for many years but it does work on my bladder.
in reply to: Yoga For arthritis #10260I’ve been practicing Bikram yoga for nearly 3 months and I’ve noticed that all my joint pain from arthritis is much less, even my fingers and wrists. I practiced yoga off an on for 4 years prior to doing hot yoga and I feel that, for me, hot yoga is doing a much better job of helping my joint pain.
I’m 62 years old. I wish I’d started this years ago and my body would be much more flexible.
in reply to: question about neck and rabbit #10118Thanks, Gabrielle,
My instinct was to,protect my neck and not force it so,it sounds like I’m on the right track.
in reply to: Wiping the sweat #10097Hi Gabrielle,
I was wiping my face a lot the first couple weeks so maybe my sweat was saltier then.
Even though toxins don’t come out in the swear, tho, it sure does open and clean out pores! My skin is really feeling smooth and soft.

in reply to: What is the best mat to buy for Bikram yoga? #10096I just put the entire mat into the washer about once a week and put it out on the patio to dry. I wash it on delicate cycle.
Its nice having the towel fused to it so it doesnt bunch up. I don’t need another towel with this mat.

in reply to: Wiping the sweat #10092This is a great thread since I was looking for info on wiping sweat from my face. I have noticed that the sweat does not sting my eyes and it made me think of something. I go to a holistic chiropractor who works with nutrition, as well as adjustments. She told me I should give up deodorant because with as healthy a lifestyle as I have, that my sweat should not smell bad.
I did give up using deodorant and have found she’s right. I guess the same thing that makes sweat smell bad is what makes it sting the eyes.
I’ve only been doing Bikram for 5 weeks but I did regular yoga before that, plus other workouts and I drink green smoothies for breakfast and lunch. I use almost all organic ingredients too and eat little meat.
I hadn’t even thought about why my sweat probably doesn’ sting my eyes til I read this thread.

Thanks for the suggestion about the search. i will try that.
My hair is short and off my face. I tried not wiping my face yesterday but did have to wipe my eyes. I will read up on it in the forum, tho.
in reply to: age and Bikram #10089Thanks, Kristin. Great article! There are people of all ages at the studio I got to but many of the older members look like theyve been doing it quite a while. I guess we never know how we look to others either. There is one older woman in my class who, to me, looks like a cover on yoga journal. Yesterday she told me she’s only been doing Bikram for 6 months and she feels she is struggling and should be doing better. I’m going to tell her about this forum next time I see her.
I’ve been doing Bikram for 5 weeks and, even at age 62, I’ve noticed my skin has become really soft and smooth.
I wondered if I could get more info about not wiping my face? I sweat A LOT on my face and it drips into my eyes. I’ve been wiping my face and didn’t know it wasn’t a good idea.
Thanks,
Joan
in reply to: Green Smoothie #10084I’ve been drinking green smoothies every morning for about 2 years and I think they’ve made a real difference to my health. This fall, I even planted a greens garden. Since I live in Texas, we can grow veggies well into December or longer.
I have the problem as well of having to go to the bathroom a lot after my smoothie. I started my Bikram practice 5 weeks ago and have to make sure I am finished with my smoothie at least 2 hours before class.
in reply to: What is the best mat to buy for Bikram yoga? #10083I bought the Aurorae Yoga Mat / Towel, “Synergy” from Amazon. It’s a mat and towel together. I wash it about once a week and it seems to be doing fine. I put it out on the patio after each class so it can dry in the fresh air then wash it on handwash/delicate cycle once a week. I go to 4-5 classes per week.
