Speaking of food, do you think green tea helps weight loss? I drink about 1L of green tea everyday at work. This is the brand they have at work and I really like the smell and taste. You can buy them at Costco if you are in Canada.

in reply to: Interesting differences between studios… #6583Interesting locust correction. I tried that in class once, and the teacher said, “I said AIRPLANE WINGS, not jet-fighter!”
I think most of the teachers in my studio has it wrong. They say 747 taking off to start the posture then tuck back the wing when it lands. 747 can’t tuck wings in, only jet-fighter can. I find it funny.. 😛in reply to: Interesting differences between studios… #6568No wonder I didn’t see you in class.. You were out of town..
Lucky you can compete in 30 day challenge. I wish I can try, but I will probably die after 1 week.
I can’t imagine the feel of wet, smelly carpet. That is the reason I will keep going to the current studio.. free use of mat, towel, locker, nice smelling bodywash, shampoo. Friendly teachers (most of them anyway) and super cute staff at the front desk.
in reply to: New Yogi Questions #6528Hello. I don’t know your condition and what your goal is. You might be interested in this thread.

in reply to: Walk me through my first class? #6518For new student, you are better off stay at the back of the class so you can follow people in front of you. Find a spot so you can see yourself in the mirror. Being able to see yourself on the mirror helps your alignment in addition to listening to teacher’s instruction. The teacher will know in advance if there is any first timer. You show hand and the teacher will give a brief introduction about the yoga and what to expect. Depending on your studio, you may or may not get free mat/towel rental. Drink lots of water and bring a bottle of water to class. You’ll definitely need it. Try not to eat three hours prior to class. Arrive early so you can lie down to relax before class. At the end of the class, try to lie down for two minutes, but not too long if you are planning to take a shower. Depending on where you are and the climate, hot water might not affect you. I once was the last person who left the room and there was no more hot water when I took my shower. I was forced to take a cold water shower. There is a reason why people are rushing out at the end of the class. At least in my studio.
in reply to: I am quite overweight and doing hot yoga #6500My weight has reached a new low level. I don’t know if it is the result of doing this yoga. I sweat bucket by the second pose. Maybe I am just losing water weight, but 5-10 lbs of water weight is a lot given I only practice two times a week. I haven’t really change my diet but I do watch what I am eating. I used to crave for junk food like chips, fries, bucket of KFC, and dine all-you-can-eat. I don’t consume solid food on Saturday, only liquid. Go for yoga in the afternoon. A light snack (Ensure) as dinner. No food on Sunday morning. Yoga class at 11. Then a bottle of Ensure. Regular meal in the evening and weekdays. I am pretty sure that I have a calorie deficit on Saturday and maybe Sunday too.
Does doing a 90 min hot yoga really burn 1000 calories based on this calculator?
Having lost “weight”, I can see the fat when I shake my tummy. So I am not sure if I am actually losing fat or muscle. I am not big or muscular by any mean.
in reply to: Saying "no" to a teacher during class #6495I know most teachers are there to help. They will modify or suggest what one can do if they know in advance about your condition. A simple word with the teacher before class should do the trick. I know there is one teacher in my studio tend to push every student in the class to their limit. You are doing yoga for yourself so don’t worry about it.
in reply to: I am quite overweight and doing hot yoga #6402Hi Boonie. Thanks for your comment. I guess I am trying to suck my stomach whenever I am bare in pubic so I don’t look as “fat”. :red: I think we were in the same class three Saturady in a role. I too look forward to seeing you again in the studio.
I have watched the video “Flatten your tummy and strengthen your back” but never tried it because I don’t have access to a gym ball. Instead of using a gym ball, do you think I can use my arm like when you are doing Locust. Instead of lying on my stomach, I am on my back with my arm under my body and lift my legs. Do you think if it will have the same effect?
in reply to: I am quite overweight and doing hot yoga #6399I consider myself “fat”. By that I mean you can see I have flat tire when I sit straight. I am certainly not skinny. Anyway, I don’t know if I am really losing fat weight or just water weight after doing hot yoga. I practice hot yoga on weekends only (two times a week). After Saturday and Sunday class, I do feel my jean fit looser. During the week, my jean return back to fitting tigher.
in reply to: YogaBody supplement really works #6358Thanks Gabrielle and Robert for the feedback.
in reply to: YogaBody supplement really works #6354Is Yogabody a dietary supplement? Bonmar mentions it keeps weight off. I love to do hot yoga while losing weight. Is there any side effects?
BTW, nice to meet you Bonnie on Saturday.
in reply to: Bikram Yoga & Fainting #6295I never seen one myself. I did experience a few near-faint.
Today was my worse class ever. I think I got a cold and took some medicine around 10am. The class was at 2:30pm. I was feeling extremely sleepy during the whole class and had a hard time keeping my eyes open in the floor series.
The slight pain/soreness happens a few days after my mini four day challenge during the Christmas break.
Before I wasn’t able to do the full fixed firm pose. I have been doing the modified version with arm and elbow resting on the heel.. something like the Camel pose.
Gabrielle,
I don’t know how I can describe it more clearly. Here is another visual of what might be happening. In order to have the butt touching the floor, I spread the leg more with feet beside the hip. Because I am spreading the leg further, the knee joint (top arrow) is forced in an awkward position.
Just came back from another class. The teacher caught me to sit the thigh on the heel (leg closer to each other). Is it the right way? I thought you are suppose to spread your lower leg out so the butt touches the floor. If this is the case, then I think the way I have been doing is wrong. I spread my lower leg wide..
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #6123No, the Richmond studio is laminated hardwoood floor. The Metrotown one is carpeted. I can’t imagine the smell at that studio.
The soreness is only noticeable when I try to tighten the leg joint. You know what I mean? It doesn’t feel anything when I am standing.
Will it get better by itself? I am very upset by it..
Gabrielle,
I fear I have injured something. When I try to stand up straight and tighten the leg joint, it feels sore. I think I force to spread the legs too wide while trying to sit on the butt in the pose that cost the injury.
I consider fixed firm pose to be similiar to camel pose. I have a great deal of difficulties with it. Should my butt be touching the floor from start to finish? I was able to practise five times last week. My legs are starting to feel sore.
Hi Jeffrey
Are you saying that you find Fixed Firm a pose that is strongly emotional for you (the topic of this thread)?
We will continue this conversation ‘over there’. May I suggest you go and take a look at the posts for Supta Vajrasana for further information? My brief answer is this: Your butt should definitely and unequivocally be on the floor from start to finish, don’t budge it or adjust it! Please post in Supta with more details about your sore legs so I know what, where and when it’s happening!
BTW: I just noticed this post is in Chit Chat rather than Camel so I will move it now!
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂
Hi Gabrielle,I hope I am not hijacking another thread to continue what I started..
The pain is on the knee joint. It is just a slight pain only after a few day later. I don’t think my butt is 100% touching the floor so I adjust the knee by spreading my knee further apart until I am sitting on my butt. I then try to fall back. It is an uneasy feeling when I am on the floor. Now I have a slight lower back pain too.
in reply to: camel pose – strongly emotional #6093I consider fixed firm pose to be similiar to camel pose. I have a great deal of difficulties with it. Should my butt be touching the floor from start to finish? I was able to practise five times last week. My legs are starting to feel sore.
in reply to: camel pose – strongly emotional #6091I don’t know if I am doing camel pose correctly. I have no problem with it. Am I suppose to feel something?
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #5924I wish one day I am brave enough, or good enough should I say, to stand on the front row. First row students suppose to be good in poses and act as a guide for others behind them.
Stupid question. What makes sweat sting my eye? Is it because it is dirty or some mineral that is in it?
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #5914The stinging is pretty bad for me also. I wear my eyeglasses during class so that makes matter worse. I can’t wipe my eyes. Without eyeglasses I can’t see myself in the mirror or follow others.
in reply to: How much does everyone sweat? #5906I notice that by the second pose (Half Moon Pose With Hands To Feet Pose) I can clearly see my footprint clearly. I notice people around me isn’t all that wet. Is that normal?
in reply to: Trouble with legs #5882I have done eight classes now but I still can’t wrap my feet on the calf. Is it because I have “big” thigh? The best I can do now is hang my feet on the side.
