I was wondering about the importance of the head touching the knees. My teachers keep saying “your head must touch your knees!” Whenever I try to touch my head to my knees, it really hurts my neck and my body just won’t go there.

    Any advice?

In the last month, I’ve been starting to experience what I believe is sciatic pain (specifically, persistent pain in the buttocks). I’ve been looking on the web for some stretching therapy but read that certain stretches actually makes the pain worse.

I remember taking a class a few years back where the teacher said that standing, if you put your toes together and leave the heels slightly apart, it would prevent sciatica, but know all too well that the advice may/may not be the most Kosher.

    Any advice?

    Hi Gabrielle!

Better late than never to respond to your question on my post- so here goes.

Once I get my hips to my heels my back is not totally straight- I almost feel like its due to my lack of ab strength…also short arms.

    Wow- what awesome feedback!

I was actually having the same trouble in my practice where if I sucked in the belly my breathing goes out the window. One of the teachers at my studio suggested trying “80-20” breathing, where you take in a full breath and the start of the posture, tighten the abs, and then release/take in smaller breaths throughout the posture. It’s not to be used for all the postures (i.e. the balancing ones) but it’s helped my tummy immensely!!!

My leg is straight, though my hips are very tight in this posture.

I’m stable when my hands are in front of me, but once I draw them back, I can’t get my hips off my ankle, and have no stability when trying to balance.

How can I improve on this?

    Thanks Gabrielle!

Yeah, I feel like I can’t get quite the height since my elbow can’t get in as close as they could if ‘the girls’ weren’t in the way.

    Belly-down Savasana is pretty comfortable.

My problem begins once I get down on the floor.

I can’t seem to get into the final prayer position, I’m not sure if it has to do with my hips being tight, my core strength not being able to support the balance, etc.

    Any suggestions?

in reply to: Trouble with legs #3338

I’m going to try these tips tonight!

I had been practicing off/on for 4 years, (followed by a 3 year Savasana)and have only been back for 2 months, but not being able to re-grasp Eagle has been really frustrating for me.

Does not being flexible play any part as well?
