in reply to: Back Sprain #10422
Update:
After being pretty sure I tore the sprain some more in class I’ve decided to give it some rest.
It will mean stiffness and less movement of inflammation but once Im in that nice hot room and I’m enjoying stretching out the rest of my back I’m now pretty positive I’m also stretching the sprain – ligaments as they are trying to stitch together – and I don’t want to develop scar tissue which can cause stiffness and other problems later. Other people who encounter this problem might not be the same as me and may have better pain and stiffness signals and/or not enjoy the ache of stretch quite as much.
I’ll give it a few days to do some repairs and then have a go with trying to take it easy.in reply to: Numbness in foot #10418Thanks Tb
The verdict from the physio iissss: Spinal Sprain
Lumbar (Low back)
Pain; mild to intense
Pain that spreads (radiates) into the buttocks, legs
Lower body stiffness
Sciatica(just a note to anyone overseas. Physios in Australia are very highly trained)
sooo I’m allowed to do yoga but I have to take it easy with forward and back bends. The reason is – if anyone gets the same – once an area in the spine is strained or sprained it locks up so movements with your back will not use that area and therefore overly rely on other parts thereby injuring them. Also the physio recommended: anti inflammatories and icing. Bracing the core more during practice should help because the injury occurred because I had more mobility then strength (at least on that day)
So whilst holding back sounds easy but when I get in that room it is sooo hard to hold back – especially when particularly those forward bends feels so good at the time.
in reply to: Skinny fit types hegemonize hot yoga? #10403I’m not a skinny body type – though frequent hot yoga practice is making me more so. Even so I’m fundamentally stockier in the shoulders etc then a lot of hot yoga practitioners.
Mostly I’d say though: try to make the yoga about you.
There will always be skinnier people, or fitter people or people better at certain postures.
I find though if I’m practicing yoga and meditation properly I’m really barely aware of other people in the room. The other thing is you might be surprised what people are thinking (if indeed they are thinking anything). When I see a huge man struggling for instance I’m always impressed because I know how the heat is affecting him more – more muscles and more general mass -, how his cardio system has to work harder to get to all that body and how he is fundamentally less flexible.
in reply to: Numbness in foot #10402The good news is I think it is resolving itself and that the sciatic nerve was being pinched by glutes.
I’ve been doing some serious glute deactivation with tennis balls etc and the numbness is getting less during class. I do have a history of my right side glute getting stupidly tense and lately I’ve been a bit lazy with holding my core in. I’ve also been taking it easy in forward bends and holding my core in more rigorously
fingers crossed eh -
