Thanks as ever for your great advice Gabrielle! I guess that’s why so many injured people come to hot yoga – for a cure from all their aches and pains. I have so many! 🙂 Thanks to this site at least I can find out what I can do to help me stay inspired.

I will keep my feet parellel and see how that goes today. Do you think I should do the same with the outstreched leg in Trikonasna? I mean keep the foot straight? Sorry to be a bore! :red:

Most of the time the teachers stress keeping the back straight (which I do) but I thought that the toes had to be pigeon toed for alignment purposes! I am so glad to hear that I can do something else now! :bug: I actually feel really silly for not knowing any better.
I have heard teachers say to keep the legs slightly bent; for those with very tight hamstrings. My hamstrings are very flexible and I dont have a problem bending from the hips at all but my poor ankle is often so uncomfortable! :down:

in reply to: Back bend problems #4430Thanka again Gabrielle I will certainly try that. What are yin style yoga strtches? My friend bought me a workout ball and so i have been lying over it on my back to try and stretch out the front of my body. Maybe that will help. 🙂

I will definately try to let go of any tensions where they should not be and I will have a go at diaphragmatic chest breathing and see if this helps. Thanks for your reply! It is a pain in the knee itself – it feels like a sharp pulling of some sort. The only way I can get away from it is to bend my knees slightly when I go back because it feels like I will do some damage if I try to keep my knee locked. I don’t feel anything in the quads at all. Really wierd!!! :-/

When going into a back bend I am able to get my arms back and push my chest up, and feel no pain in my lower back. I try to keep my knees locked as I go back and push my hips forward but I have sharp pains in my knees if I try to lock them. Am I pulling up on my thigh muscles too tightly?? :-S Thanks in advance for your help!

in reply to: Pear shape and thighs and bikram #4275I am swimming once a week and practising hot yoga 4 times a week. I noticed that I started looking more streamlined about 4 months in. I am really pleased because I had a two size difference between my top and bottom half! Now I still have a difference but its not as apparent. Maybe because I have lost some body fat. 🙂
Ultimately what makes the most difference is really watching what I eat and making sure I eat a balanced nutritionally rich diet. That means I have to be organised with my shopping habits.

in reply to: Pear shape and thighs and bikram #4267Six months ago I gave up body pump, step, circuit training, and aerobics for hot yoga and swimming. I am quite tall and have an athletic build, and I am pear shaped.
Six months on my body weight has not changed but my body looks longer and leaner without the muscle bulk that I had before! Hot yoga really keeps the muscle mass without any bulkiness.
Some of the poses I find difficult because of my shape but that’s life. 🙂
I have a very positive body image and would rather a curvaceous body over a very thin one any day! Sometimes i notice that there is a bit of snobbishness around body shape in classes. Surely you should not be aiming to be thin when practising yoga should you? :-/ It is really important to realise that when you are strong then you will be toned which gives you shape!

I’m not quite sure if this type of attitude is conducive to a community feel in the class and not good for meditation! :down: I have not experienced this from an instructor yet but if I thought someone was being humiliated I would have to inform the owner. I can understand why you were so upset.
