Hi Georgette
I am glad you are taking the steps to lose weight, I too was heavy weighing at 110kg I lost 30 kg in one year doing Muay Thai boxing, running and now Bikram, I fall in love with Bikram Yoga, what I can suggest is that you can get the DVD to start with, the instruction is clear, http://www.hotyogamasterclass.com. I bought the DVD Volume 1 and 2 and is helpful, becuase in class the teacher cannot focus on everyone, so it is good to learn some of the pose yourself. Another thing I notice a lot of new student jump into Bikram and got scare of it because of the intense heat. Many get dizzy and felling nausea, getting panic. You can use the DVD practice in the classes in the DVD and join a class later so you have some form of expectation.
Personally before I join Bikram I am already quite fit, because of my Muay Thai background, but my first class is still tough for me and I also heard people who run Marathon make comment like I sweat more then running the 42 km. So don’t expect to be a normal yoga class, this is tough but the result is really worth it, otherwise I wouldn’t fall in love with it.
Hope you success in you weight loss quest.

Thanks for the information. I just received the 2 DVDs and on the master Yoga class. The information is good with the explanation on how to do the pose correctly.

Vincentin reply to: Hot Yoga v Bikram Yoga #5138The studio I am with has hot yoga and bikram class, hot yoga, is a milder form in hat the room is heated to 35 degree celsius and last 60 minutes, whereas bikram is 40 degree and 90 minutes. Bikram, has it own standard set of the 26 poses where hot yoga they have different pose such as sun salutation sequence. I started doing hot yoga first then I move to Bikram, and never go back to hot yoga. Not sure why maybe I like the challenge, and the strict discipline like martial arts class. In the hot yoga class, we can drink water any time we want and wipe of our sweat whereas in Bikram water break is very much in controll like only after eagle pose then that is the first water break, the rest will only comes when you finished 2 set of the pose then we can drink, also we cannot leave the room after 90 minutes, even if you cannot take the heat you can sit down or lie down but not leave the room.
Another difference is that in Bikram the teacher does not demonstrate the pose whereas in the hot yoga the teacher do the pose with the students unless he notice some student is not getting it, he will then move to that student to correct his/her form.
That is my experience of the 2 different type of yoga.
Last but not least, I think the teacher for Bikram is certified by Bikram himself that is what I know.
in reply to: Bikram & Weight Loss & other benefits! #5094I believe bikram can help to loose weight, I do muay thai training and the training is really tough, like the warm up itself is 2000 time rope skip, follow with shadow boxing bagwork and ending with 50 push-up, 100 crunches, leg raise, squat and so on. When I first try out bikram, I find it tough and I perspired as much as in my boxing training.
One question I want to know is, I notice the guys in bikram class and also I did a bit of research on yoga, that yoga build muscle that is long and lean because of the stretches, I have build quite a nice 6 pack abs (which I am very proud of) through my boxing training, will yoga make my 6 pack abs disappear. I notice even the male teacher does not have 6 pack abs but they have a nice long lean cut body type which looks fat free. When I am in a class, I look odd :cheese: among the male in the class because of the build I have.
I took up yoga to help me to be more flexible for my high kicks and martial arts, which it did help a lot.
thanks
Vincentin reply to: Loose skin? #5039I just started doing Bikram and I have lost 28 kg, through running and muay thai boxing, now I have loose skin and my lower tummy and I can see the skin fold, I seem to stuck with this for a while, though I can see the 4 pack on my upper abs.
I hope Bikram can help me to shed more fat and the unsightly skin fold and really build my 6 pack abs more define. I notice that the guys in Yoga classes does not have a clearly define 6 packs, they tend to be slim and lenghthy maybe because yoga build long muscle not like weigh training or crunches build. So I am not sure am I doing right thing to build my 6 pack. I will continue doing crunches and my cardio.
